Personal experiences with the name Sabra: | Edit

I am truly surprised that Sabra was not already part of Namipedia prior to September 2009. I am not Jewish but remember reading that one woman with this name would "test" baby name books by checking to see if her name was included. I am familiar with the name because of a local newspaper reporter.

Meanings and history of the name Sabra: | Edit

Sabra means "rest" in Hebrew. It was a common name in colonial New England, and is still used there. In recent decades, Sabra has come to be a word for a native-born Israeli [from Hebrew ṣābār: sabra, prickly pear], as the fruit is tough and dangerous-looking on the outside but sweet on the inside. Many Israeli and Jewish girls are given the name for this reason.
