We named our daughter Sagan after Carl Sagan. Her initial birth name was Marie, but in a short time it was clear that Marie didn't fit our daughters personality at all, was too feminine and common making it offensive in some small way. Carl Sagan possessed so many virtues and such great intellect that we deemed him to be a terrific potential role model should our daughter ever associate with the one from whom she was named. We had also never heard of a female Sagan to date, and it felt right for her and something special we could give to her.

Years ago there was a character on the TV show "St. Elsewhere" that had a female doctor named Dr. Jacqueline Wade who was played by Sagan Lewis. My husband knew I liked this unusual name so he wanted this name for our daughter, Olivia's, middle name.

Since my first name is Sagan, I am always curious when I meet another Sagan. So far I've met or been made aware of 32 Sagan's in the United States. Almost all say they were named after an attractive actress named Sagan Lewis of St. Elsewhere fame.I love the name. Its strong, memorable,unique, feminine and wise.

Many people have commented on how unusual the name is and wonder if we named her after Carl Sagan, the astronomer; something my husband was into at the time.

My first name is Sagan and people respond very well to the name.

Sagan Lewis was an actress who played a surgeon on St. Elsewhere in thje 1980s. In an interview she said as far as she knew she was the first with the first name Sagan...but many fans had written to her that they were naming their baby Sagan. Maybe this actress started a new first name!

I've also heard in Welsh it means "Little Dreamer."
