Sakura ("cherry blossom") is currently one of the most popular names for girls in Japan. Up until recently, it was rarely used as a name, because cherry blossoms fall quickly from the tree and it was felt to be a bad omen that the child would die young. However, it became highly fashionable in the 1990's and remains very popular. Japanese parents like it because it has strong, romantic associations with Japanese culture and tradition, yet it's rarely used by older generations so it sounds youthful and fresh.
