While increasing popular in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in the North especially the name Saoirse has in the recent past carried a stigma: as a name with an obviously "patriotic" connotation, it is often seen as exclusively Nationalist territory (i.e., as opposed to Unionist). This is also true to some extent of all overtly Irish names in NI, the growing Catholic Nationaist population and the recognition of Irish culture in the Good Friday Agreement have reduced the danger of being "marked" by one's name. Even so, names are still political fodder here.

This name is growing in popularity in the US. Since giving my daughter this name I have come across 6 other little girls named Saoirse. Sair-Sha does seem to be a more popular pronounciation then Seer-Sha. Though I have been told that even in Ireland the pronounciation varies depending on the area.

my name is Saoirse, and here in Ireland there are a lot of people that just call me Sersh. mostly when texting cause they're just too lazy to spell it haha!

We have a three year old daughter called Saoirse, we really adore her & we think the name suits her 100%, the common abbreviations seem to be 'Sersh' or 'Search', and the only concern we have with the name is the strong republican connection/connotation, which we were were blissfully unaware of when we named her!

We still love the name though )
