Silvia was the one name that ended up on the independently-made lists of my husband and myself. We loved the sound, the literary allusions, and that it was of the old-fashioned era of lovely female names, but without being over-used. I initially argued for the Sylvia spelling (so she wouldn't have to spell it every time), but my husband lobbied hard for the Silvia spelling, arguing that it was more international, less stodgy, and, the winning argument, that's how Shakespeare spelled it.

My name is Sylvia. I was named after my grandmother. She told me when I was young that the "Y" spelling was Hebrew in origin. The "I" spelling indicated a nordic or christian spelling. Not sure if it is true and would love imput.
