Possibly related to Latin verus "true". Saint Verena was a 3rd-century Egyptian-born nurse who went with the Theban Legion to Switzerland. After the legion was massacred she settled near Zurich.

I met a little girl named Verena in northern Italy (the German-speaking area) in 1999. I swore I would name my first-born daughter after her, I loved her name so much. In 2007, I made good on my promise with the birth of my daughter Verena Carolyn.
