It took me a while to make it though all the comments - it's been a busy week! Re: double names - a girl in my high school, graduated 1995: Thomasina Thomas. An older man (in his 40s): Knute Knuteson. New baby alert: Lilly Ave1ina LN I too am finding that I am very interested in names. Maybe it's because I'm pregnant or maybe I'm a budding NE...don't know. Only time will tell. NicoleM: Re: Donovan. That was on our short list, too, but we've decided against it. We also had Dunstan...if Duncan won't work because of the donut connection, could Dunstan be close enough? I kinda think of Dunstan as combo between Duncan and Dustin, FWIW. Although, that does still keep with the -n ending.
Another new baby alert, also 2 mns: C@el Emerson Gr@eme LN
KRC- I also like Hugo. Not too fond of August Thomas because of the repetitive T, but that's just me. Regarding Astrid, there is a character (minor, but she's seen regularly in every episode) in Fringe, the Fox Sci-Fi show. She's an FBI agent, FWIW. Just thought you'd like to know. I don't know if Astrid would become a very common name, but I have seen it show up a couple times on TV. New Baby Alert: Zoe Lida Maria LN Again, 2 middle names! Every baby I've seen announced on my various lists or my friends have had 2 middle names. We're leaning that way, too. Also, question: my friend is pregnant and having a contest regarding naming her baby. She has an Alex and an Anabel. She doesn't not know the sex of the baby. Middle name will be Japanese (not sure what, though) as both other kids have Japanese middle names because of dad's heritage. I've suggested she come here...but haven't seen her post yet. So...Any suggestions?! She said the name doesn't have to start with an A, but could. Thanks!
J&H - Yeah, Dugan does remind me of the Duggars to an extent. Although I think after hearing it attached to a child it'd work fine. One of the potential spellings of Dugan is Duggan, but because of the Duggar family I think I'd stay with one D. zoerhenne - I had a lot of names on my list, didn't I?! Well, by husband and I decided that the first name will be directly related to Donald, my dad, and the middle name would be a direct link to his family (maternal side) - many of the middle names I had listed before were just names that fit my rules WRT sounds, number of syllables, etc. So, we're down to James (or maybe Jack), and Elliot as mns. We'll probably use Tucker as a second middle.
zoerhenne - Yeah, I'm still reading a lot, just not able to do as much typing lately! So I'm here... Yup, Donovan is out. I don't like the possibility of Don as a nn and husband doesn't like it with our last name. In addition, I'm starting to get so tired of telling people that Trip isn't Trip's real name and going through the explanation over and over and over. To me, he's Trip and not Robert, so it's hard when we're at an official place or I need to fill out official paperwork. So, although I like the possibility of having a nn we can use as a family, I really want a name that I like as-is, so he can always go by that. Aldon is one of those names I like. Same with Dugan. I also still like Dunn as a fn, but just can't seem to find a mn that works well.
WRT anagram names - We're considering an anagram name :-) Alddon = Donald. We may drop the extra "D" though, haven't decided. Any opinions either way? My thoughts are that it'd be nice to have a direct anagram to honor my father, but yet wonder if the extra D would complicate things. However, other names have double letters: Mine (Allison), and Addison are two I can think of. Whatcha think? So, back to my name saga. Considering: Aldon James Tucker LN Dugan Elliot LN I'm thinking we're down to those two as first names. What do you think of: Aldon Elliot Tucker LN? Or just Aldon Elliot LN? I'm not sure if I like 2 names starting with vowel sounds, but they are different sounds...do ya'll think it sounds ok? I like Elliot as a better MN than James, because it has a double family connection via sound - my grandmother is Elza and my husband's grandmother was Eleanor. T- I LOVE Cordelia! I think Penelope, Persephone, and Gwendolyn are good twin names, too. Re: Ignatius - I also like Iagan. LOVE Marina Raquel! I think they sound really great together and don't seem two different styles. New Babies: Sus@nnah Grace Marie LN (sib Maria) Amir@ Lillian@ Sky George (sib Arturo) It seems I'm seeing more double middle names. Not something I've been familiar with, but have a few friends who have done so, often to honor family members.
So, I was video-conferencing with my FIL, his mother, and his cousin yesterday and they asked if we knew what we were having. A boy, I told them. They never once asked what names we were thinking of, but they suggested Drambuie. Seriously. And continued to insist and insist that this would be a perfect name for our son. Even though both our other kids have family names (Drambuie, I don't believe, is a family name). I think they even threw out a middle name that "matched" well - I think it was Beau... I'm guessing this is a common problem? With our first, we didn't tell anyone the sex until she was almost here (even though we knew) and with the second, he was going to be a third, so the name was already set once we knew the sex, although FIL did try to talk us out of it. I guess the Drambuie kinda fits with a previous post about a Daquari, huh? Maybe adult beverage names are really "in"?
Baby name I saw posted on an email list, born last week: Adonir@m Joshu@ Not sure how to pronounce it, though.
WRT doll names, I don't remember most of them. But I do remember being fairly young and playing "school". One of my "students" was always Lyndon B. Johnson, and I honestly don't even know if I even vaguely knew that he was a former president. It's interesting, too, that I'm actually considering the name Lindon/Linden for my upcoming baby, too. Just kinda worked out that way.
WRT school and birthdays, here in Arizona kids are at a disadvantage if they are born after September 1st. So if your child turns 5 September 2nd, they can't start kindergarten until the following school year - they would be almost 6 and the oldest in their class. Some districts will allow you to have your child tested, but often they charge you and it takes a lot for them to qualify. I know for me, I'd much more interested in keeping my kids out of the school system. Yet my daughter is very determined to start school in the fall. We may try it out for her, but if she starts getting bored, I'd have no qualms taking her out and homeschooling her -which we've been doing unofficially already. New baby I just saw announced: Mar1issa V@lentine.
re: Birth months - I know here in Arizona many women plan on *not* being pregnant during the hot summer months. I wonder if there is a difference for Phoenix versus other parts of the country because of this. I know for me, my daughter was born in October and that was too uncomfortable. My son was born in March and that was great! I have another coming in May and I'm wondering how comfortable I'll be come April - it just gets really, really hot! I also wondered about the numbers/symbols in names. I figured it was to prevent googling. Are they specific keys for symbol/letter substitution? From what I've seen @=a. What others are there? I've seen a 1, but I can't remember if it's for i or l.
Miranda - in the Sci Fi show Stargate Atlantis, Ronon is pronounced RO - nen. Don't know if that helps.
bill - Any suggestions for O and N names? I have: Odin/Odon Ogdon (also a homage to my and my husband's Alma Mater) That's it. So, what did you have in mind? I don't mind making this harder for myself ;-)
1. zoerhenne - Yup, already using a spreadsheet ;-) I do look forward to your posts and am happy you are enjoying this baby naming process as much as I, so I don't mind. I do like Donovan Jack, and that one wasn't on my list. Donovan Patrick Eugene sounds good, too. I have: Aldon James Patterson W*s Dugan James Patterson W*s Dugan James Tucker W*s Dugan James Pattrick W*s Donovan James Elliot W*s I think I could actually replace Dugan with Aldon, Donovan, or Dunstin in all the above combos. I'm still working on combos for Dunn: Dunn Alexander ________ W*s ? Jack, Eugene, Gene, Scott? It would have to be a family name from my husband's side. Any ideas for a boy form of Eleanor? Patterson was my grandfather's middle name, BTW. 2. Penelope - Family names, IMHO, are wonderful! I prefer to modify a family name so it's more "inspired by" rather than a direct naming. For instance, my Talia Mikell was named for my husband's Great Grandma "Italia" and my mother "Michaelene". For me, this shows a close family tie, but doesn't have the specific expectations of living up to or being like the person named for. Makes things more challenging, though ;-)
Wendolyn - I like Lorenzo as well. Enzo is a very nice name, but I agree that Lorenzo allows for the adult to make a more involved choice in what he goes by. Buttercup - I have an Aunt Cookie, too! She's married to Uncle Sonny (given names Catherine and John). They named their oldest girl Catherine and oldest son John as well, who go by Cathy and John (didn't continue the nns. I also have an Aunt PG (named Geraldine after a neighbor, who came up with the nn for her) who is married to Uncle Fuzz (named Gerald, but the nn is a shortened form of his difficult-to-pronounce hungarian last name). One of my cousins is Chip (given name John after his father). So my Trip fits in with the family by having a nn that isn't derived directly from his given name.
zoerhenne - Hmmm...as I was reading the posts about multiple mn I was thinking the same as you. I don't know. I'll have to consider it and talk with my husband. Talk about adding more complexity to things, though! More permutations to wade through ;-) Based on what you've seen of my ideas and likes, do you have any specific recommendations of names with 2 middle name combos? Something with a J as one of the middle names? Also, Eleanor was my husband's maternal grandmother. Are there any boy names that could be derived from this, either by sound or meaning? I've thought of Elliot and Leonard, both based on sound alone. I haven't actually looked it up yet.
zoerhenne - Regarding the syllable thing: I'm only opposed to 2-2-2. My husband thinks I'm nuts. We did do some mn narrowing tonight. Husband nixed a few outright and is considering several that he thought so/so. Others were ok, so we'll revisit in a day or few and see what his opinions are then. I did let him know which names seemed to be favs here. WRT Tammis - I think I have that book! I remember reading the list and always wondering about that name, as I've never heard it or seen it anywhere. I don't think I'd use it for any of my kids, though.
Mirnada - Thanks! I like Aldon Scott, too. Scott is my husband's uncle, so might be in the running as it keeps with our desire for keeping to family names. Penelope - Another tally for Aldon Scott :-) I also like Donovan Tucker, and it's still on the list, but because Tucker has no family link whatsoever, we're doing more looking. Honestly, that part is up to my husband, because it's his family tie that would be missed, as mine is the first name. So we'll see. I like your suggestion of Dugan Jacoby! That is being added to the list. Regarding my husband's opinion, he doesn't have one yet. He's much more a thinker and I'm more a doer, so he'll ruminate about it for a while before coming to an opinion either way. It's much easier when I have the list narrowed down, though. Re: Lindon/Linden: I don't know that I have a preference. I went with Lindon because of the "don" reference as well as the president's spelling (but definitely prefer i over y). I also know a Landon. We'll see - probably also depends on the middle name and it's spelling as well. Amy3 - Two more tallies for Aldon Scott and Donovan Tucker. These seem to be the most popular so far. Nicole S - It's good someone likes Aldon Jack :-) Jack is a family name and it'd be great to have it on the list. I'm not sure I like it much, but I've found that I feel differently about names over time. Plus, my husband *does* get a say in the matter. Regarding your suggested spellings: Jeffrey can't be 2 syllables, which is why I have the extra "e" making it a 3 syllable name. Dunstan seems to be the traditional spelling, but because it sounds like a combination of Duncan and Dustin to me, I think Dunstin makes more sense, and it's more how I'll pronounce it. I've commented on Linden above. Duggan/Dugan I've seen both ways. I don't know that I have a preference either way, but it seemed to me that more people would pronounce it with the short U with two gs and a long U (OO) with one. Not sure, though. Plus, with the media surrounding the Duggar family, I wanted to avoid that possible misconnection. zoerhenne - Thanks for the name combo suggestions. Dugan is DOO-gan, and based on what I've found online, seems to be spelled a few different ways. Judston is interesting - both would fit with my dad's name and the Js from my husband's family, which would free up the middle name to be anything. Not sure I like Jud, though - does it sound good with Talia and Trip? I don't think it's too made up. I have thought of Maxwell, but can't have a 2 syllable mn unless the first name is one or three...so it would work with Dunn and Donovan, but not the others. You think Maxwell sounds ok with either of these? I think it's ok with Donovan, but maybe not so much with Dunn. I think James would be a perfect middle name, but my husband's lastname ends in S (W1ll1@ms), and I don't like the two S sounds at the end. I might be able to get over it... Guest: I'm afraid Donal would never be pronounced correctly (with the long O). And it's very close to Donald, which is what I wanted to avoid - honer my dad without a direct naming. Thanks, though! The ideas are really great! I certainly appreciate all the comments and suggestions.
So I've made some progress - at least, I think so. My husband is patiently listening to my ideas, but staying mostly non-committal. Anyhow I'm starting to try to make first name/middle name pairs, to see if any strike me. I know we'd like to have my husband's side of the family be the inspiration for the middle name. J names are a good start. There are some other family names that might also work for inspiration: Peter, Jack, Eugene, Scott. Also, since our first name choices are a bit out-of-the-mainstream, I'd like to try to have a more traditional, less "out there" middle name. Here's some of what I have now (not all have any family influence): Aldon: Scott, Jack, Gene, Christopher, Cale, Timothy, Graham, Jeffery, Jace, Theodore Donovan: Tucker, Gene, Reid, Graham, Luke Dunstin: Tate, Jack, Gene, Graham, Joel, Patrick, Luke Lindon: Gene, Elliot Also, I have 2 new first names: Dunn: Alexander, Patrick, Oliver, Eugene, Gregory Dugan: Oliver, Tyler Dunn and Dugan both seem to be of Irish descent and both are similar to Donald. Of all the above, I seem to love (at least today - it changes daily): Aldon Scott, Dunn Alexander, Dunstin Tate, and Dunstin Joel. I really like Dugan, but haven't really felt I've found a great middle name to match yet, although many of the ones for Aldon would probably work find, but I haven't put them together in my head just yet. Thoughts? Suggestions? The J names have really been hard for me - especially since I really want to avoid 2 syllable first, middle, and last name. Thanks!
My Trip *is* a third, but my husband and I got the idea from Star Trek Enterprise. Maybe Bristol and Levi are fans? I wonder if that is also why Tucker sounds good to me, as the character is Charles Tucker, III aka Trip. Hm... Funny how a night or two ago I was thinking that so far I had't heard of new Trips, and he's going on 2. After Talia was born I started seeing more Talias and have run into several in my area. I guess that thought was prescient, eh?
