For the Geeks among us, Penny/Penelope is the non-geeky girl on The Big Bang Theory. Another possible source of exposure for this name in recent years.

Love the sound of Kiriath, meaning stronghold. But I'm not sure I could actually do it, even if I could get DH on board.

For a girl, I like the sound of Inara. But I first heard the name on a character that wasn't exactly a role-model, so I don't think we'll use it.

I had a great-great grandmother with the name Ersie. I'd always assumed that it was a relatively common name alongside Elsie, but when I checked the NameVoyager, Namipedia, and a quick search of Google, I didn't find anything that supported that idea. Is anyone else familiar with this generational name? My NE tendencies have piqued my curiosity as to where this name came from. I've put out some inquiries within my family in hopes that someone may know a family story on this.

Just a belated thank you. Several months ago I was asking for input on the name Izola. I much appreciated everyone who gave feedback! Since my husband dislikes the nn Izzy, we ultimately chose another name for our daughter--Tabitha Grace. I don't always have time to keep up with the discussions, but I do enjoy them very much when I can! And now I'll return to my normal lurking.

Not on the thread topic. I'm expecting my first in early August. We aren't finding out if it's boy or girl. Our list of possible names is still quite long, but I'd like to get some objective opinions on one name under consideration--Izola. Izola (eye-ZOE-la) is the name of a family friend who was an "adopted" grandmother up through my grade school years, so it is familiar and has sentimental associations for me. How does the name strike someone unfamiliar with it? Does it sound old-fashioned? Made-up? Awkward? Any cultural associations?

Another comment about seasonal/month/day names. I grew up with (if I remember birthdays correctly) a Summer born in the summer and a September not born in September. Have also met Autumns, do not know when they were born. Several years ago, I met a Tuesday who was not born on Tuesday. She'd be in her 20's now. My best friend through grade school was born on Valentine's day and had Valentine as his mn.
