In Response to Ask the Name Lady

Valerie, I know what you mean about the sibsets. Based on last names, I'm thinking that a few of them are blended families so say, Brandy and Emily may not share the same 2 parents. As for Chloe and Mackenzie, they do share the same ending sound and the "k" sound although different spellings. If you only went by sound, not look, origin, or style, they could work together. FWIW, I endeavored not to have my kids names be too matchy lest I back myself into a corner. (Elijah, Corinne, Dominic, Lucy, Theodore) I am not a fan of the spellings of Honestee and Saydi either although I think Sadie Truth is a bold choice. I wonder if the parents of S. Honestee thought that the spelling would make it more name-like? Zoerhenne, thanks for the invite to the other thread. Let's see how long my little guy lets me read on the computer...

In Response to Ask the Name Lady

It has been forever since I posted any comments (kids sick & busy busy) but I saw the birth announcements in our little local paper and HAD to post them because I thought they were so interesting: Older siblings are in parentheses. Saydi Truth (Romeo, Ezekiel) Seniyah Honestee (Seonnah) Nolan Xavier (Jacob) Emily Marie (Brandy) Paul Rene, Jr. (Brian, Zachary, Jason, Elijah, Kyla, Isabella) Gavin Ryan John Patrick Chase Gavin (Shawn, Adam, Ethan) Luke Matthew (Michael) Mackenzie Rae (Chloe Danielle) Brady Paul (Gavin, Torilynn) I find it fascinating that 2 girls born 3 days apart at the same smallish hospital have the middle names Truth and Honestee. Gavin certainly seems to be an up-and-coming name since it was a first name, middle name and sibling name. Two other babies born to friends recently: Gabriela Silvia (Alex, Emily, David, Grace, Mariana, Daniel) Tarynn Marielle (Aemilia, Aoife)

In Response to The elusive "bad" name

I agree very much so (see last thread) on little Adolph, etc. I think that foreign names that just happen to sound like vulgar English words are unfortunate but not bad. I have known a few "Bimbo"s (short for Abimbola) who have further shortened to Bim. I also once subbed in a kindergarten class with a little girl named Titi and a last name with the first syllable "fuk". The worst part was that the teacher sang the roll in the morning and the students would sing it back to her. Poor Titi's name all together just was very catchy (her last name was 4 syllables & rather melodic) so the children walked around singing her name to themselves.

There is an article online that says the parents named Honzlynn Hinler after Heinrich Himmler. I don't know how they got that. I think that they have a right to name their children whatever cruel and abhorrent names they want, that everyone else has a right to criticize those names and the store has a right to refuse to use the cruel and abhorrent names. Frankly I have always disliked when people have an agenda when naming their child even if I agree with the agenda. This particular agenda is particularly awful. I don't have a problem with someone naming their child as an homage to a person they admire but it seems obvious from the stories that these parents want to draw people's attention to their childrens' full names.

Congrats Lillian! Eve sounds very nice with the rest of your family as well as being beautiful on its own. Della makes me think of the actress, singer Della Reese although wikipedia says that her fn was originally Delloreese.

We just got the class holiday list - 3rd grade girls: Diane, Isabella, Amanda, Jordan, Mia, Sarah, Mackenzie, Abby, Bethany, Corinne, Alexus boys: Cameron, Brandon, Brent, Samuel, Isaiah, Jack, Arion, Luis, Evan, Blake I had been waiting for the list since dd had been talking about "Aryan" and I was dying to see how it was spelled. I somehow feel better that he has a latino last name (and i'm told that he works with the ELL teacher) as well as the Arion spelling. I don't think OJ is a problem. Sienna Noelle is very nice.

zoerhenne - you must be on the same wavelength as my husband. That was his next comment on "Danger" I too think Sully, Fletcher and Scarlett are interesting. Each of the two together without the 3rd would give a different vibe.

I know a couple of little Josephs - one isn't quite 2, the other is 2 or 3 now. My 8 year old daughter has a friend whose name is Joseph but because his father and grandfather are also Joseph, he goes by Jack. I think Joseph is wonderfully versatile - it can be simple or elegant, common or international. Simon... I have disliked the name since reading Lord of the Flies in 8th grade and then again in 9th. There is not actually anything wrong with the name but it just has the aura of Lord of the Flies for me. I prefer Simeon. Camille is hard to pull off for a boy in the States but I like the idea of using Cam. I like Anya Pascale. I think it sounds smart and snappy. It is a French girl name that doesn't sound too frilly to English-speaking ears ( English-hearing ears? The ears of English speakers.) I got my high school alumni newsletter today (private Catholic school) & these are the names of recent births, sib names following: Anna Grace & Charles Edward (twins) - (Lauren) Laura Ann Alexandra Jane - (Brooke & Madison) Lola Grace - (Nicholas) Ruby Olivia Clare Luca Jason - (Isabella Maryanna) Izaac Christian - (Briella) Liam Joseph Logan Drew F. Braedon Danger - (Cameron) sib-set Fletcher, Sully, & Scarlett My husband and I both had the same thought about Braedon Danger- we can picture him saying "my middle name is Danger. Seriously." Makes me wonder what Cameron's middle name is.

Annalise Robin is the only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned. What do you think of my great-grandmother's name - Lumina (pronounced Loo Mee Na)? I can't say that I would use Bertha, Mildred, Gertrude, Vera or Floyd. I can't remember the other names.

Robyn T. - I think Leo can stand alone. I know a Leo who is in his early 30's. I've got a soft spot for the name, it was the name my grandmother called my grandfather, Leon. re: Jamie. My sister had a friend named Jamie but that was his full name. I have a friend with a daughter Jaymee, named after her dad whose name is John but whose family calls him Jamie. Elizabeth T. - congratulations on being rid of "booger". I am impressed by your positive approach. Auslag - I like Christopher Finn. What about Ethan or Owen?

My first thought about Skyla was that it was a southern-New-England accented Skyler. (I have a cousin whose daughter is Taylor. I thought it was Tayla for the longest time.) Speaking of Southern New England - I haven't met any children named Eloise but it sounds like a name that would be popular here.

About Juniper - I have not heard of any. I mentioned it a couple of times when in name negotiations with dh but it got shot down pretty early. It sounds like a California name to him but that isn't why he objects.

Eo - what a nice compliment, ravishing! It has always made me feel special; my dad used to call me "the Pearl of great price". I don't know how my grandmother felt about it, I only know that they gave my great-grandmother a hard time when it was time to baptize little Pearl because at the time you had to have a Saint's name. I don't know the resolution.

I know several Graces - a Mary Grace who goes by Grace - late 50s, don;t know the sibs, Marygrace who goes by Gracie, (6), sibs Patrick, Teresa (nn Tess) & John (nn Jack) Grace (5ish) - baby brother Blake Grace (8) - sibs Alex, Emily, David,Mariana, Daniel Grace (4ish) sibs Elizabeth, Benjamin, Luke, RIta All but the 5ish are fairly devout Catholics, although Gracie was named by her birthmom, so I am guessing they were mostly named at least partly for the meaning. My daughter is Lucy Grace Irene for the meaning too. Eo - I also find myself drawn more to biblical names, virtue names, and being Catholic, saint's names. I have met several boys names Christian, many of them are Hispanic boys ages 10- 14. It is a little more in-your-face, I suppose, but most people don't seem to take it like that. I never gave much thought to the lack of gratitude in Western names. Hmm

Alice Blue Gown - I too like Tobias Allison - I like Griffin but I think Elliott goes better with your other sons' names. I like the suggestion someone else had of Garrett. Madelyn is nice but very popular where I am. I like Georgia. Lillian - Welcome to the Moms of 5 club - I like Rowan. Miriam - Glad to see you were able to log on as yourself. I'm guessing most guys don't think about names much without an association to attach to the name like "hot". A daughter seems to be the strange dichotomy of someone you care about how they look but don't want people to think of having sex with. I won't be sharing their idea that Shannon is a "slutty" name with my cousin who has a 6 month old Shannon. Bronx Wentz? Bronx Mowgli Wentz?! Bronx could be ok by itself. Mowgli just sounds silly notwithstanding Kipling. Altogether it is a trainwreck.
