@JenMN A friend has a lovely third daughter named Natalie who goes by "Nata." It's such a sweet soft nickname, which doesn't sound much like Nat to me at all (strange how that one extra "a" changes everything...)! Also, you mentioned "V" names. Have you considered Veronica? It's got lots of lovely nicknames and is sweetly feminine, while still strong and easy to spell and pronounce.

Well, we're strongly considering Alistair for our second kid, so I'll offer up my daughter's name as a potential sibling: Hazel. Not Scottish, obviously, but I think it would work nicely. Also, when I lived in London in the 80s I knew an adolescent Alistair whose sister's name was Catriona (pronounced Katrina). Several of the other sib options mentioned are also on the list we're currently considering. Maeve, especially. We're also considering Rhona.

This post is wonderful! I can't resist asking, though: when is the next edition slated for publication? I'm due with a 2nd child in August, and my 1st edition book has been well-thumbed for years... I'd love a new book to mull over if the pub date is in the first half of this year!

In Response to The Power Of Michelle?

I vote for Tobias James. Great name. and to rlegate, what about Corridon, nn Cory for a girl, too? Maybe Corridon May so that she share an initial with her big sister? Or Corinne, nn Cory. I knew a Corinna Marie growing up and I always thought it the prettiest name!

In Response to Pre-judging Judges?

I worked at a local polling place (a LONG day in my county, as there are no shifts -- it's a 6am to 9pm day!). It was so much fun to read and pronounce dozens of names I'd never heard :) I'd recommend the job of pollworker to NEs and voting enthusiasts the world over. Oh, and I received a telephone reminder to vote the day before the election from a woman with my name (an uncommon name when I was born, though it's now increasing in popularity among little ones)! This is a name that I've encountered on grown women maybe a half dozen times in my whole life. It was an exciting coincidence for me.

On Shadrach, I agree that it probably _should_ be pronounced in the Hebrew way (or in this case more accurately, the Persian way), but I think it would get the "Shad-rack" pronunciation more commonly. I think the pronunciation on it would be a losing battle... And I realized that it's exactly that pronunciation that bothers me most -- that oh-so-American "a" sound. (The comparison to Aflac is an apt one.) Another name (coincidentally also Persian) that's on the table avoids that exact problem: Tarek. With Tarek it seems very natural for the first syllable to rhyme with "tar" or "bar" or "car," a sound I much prefer. We weren't talking about the name because of its links to the OT, though I did know about the story. The wikipedia link was great and very informative. Very interesting that the name is more Babylonian than Hebrew. Thank you for all the great feedback on Shadrach. I'm still on the fence about it myself, but at least I understand some of the reasoning more clearly now!

Thanks for the feedback! Aybee, yes, your suggestion makes sense. Unfortunately the first name is far too common for me to want to use it (though it's nice enough, I suppose). It's the number one name in the area we're from. That said, it's definitely good to have a fallback "normal" name, as Clementine points out. And yes, I believe the name is pronounced Shad-rack.

Off topic, but relating to name options... It looks like my partner (C) and i will be seriously considering the name Shadrach, for a son. It would be the middle name after a very standard first name that he'd share with his father, but also the name he'd more likely go by (partner uses middle name as well). C really loves it and keeps coming back to it, and I like how much he's drawn to it even though this isn't a first pick name for me. And the possible nicknames seem good: Shad, Shaq, Rock or Rocky. (So, I don't mind that it wasn't first string for me.) Does anyone have feedback on Shadrach, as a middle? (And no, this isn't a name we'd likely share with friends & family ahead of time, but I would anticipate LOTS of feedback from folks if we were to go with it!)
