Thank you all for the encouraging words!  I really can't imagine another name better for our little girl, but I do feel some relief that others (who have no reason to lie or try and spare my feelings) have responded so positively to the name Julia. I think part of my unease was due to the fact that I had no opportunity to feel the name out prior to choosing it, unlike with our first daughter's name - Elaina - which we decided on well before her birth. But, I think Julia knew her name before we did, lol. It's no wonder nothing else felt right! Thank you again for your input, everyone!

I apologize for any confusion my statement created. To be more specific, by "Alex" names I mean Alexis, Alexia, and Lexi - and 'certain industries' was a reference to exotic dancing - apparently my dad (who's a trucker, though that's really no excuse) spent more time in clubs than I realized, and his associating Alexandra with those other names turned me off it. Alexandra is a beautiful name - I did not mean to imply otherwise. I also think the other names are pretty. They were all on the list, actually. I really meant no offense, I often speak/write without filtering. :-(

I thought Avi or Ava, too. I will be watching Fiddler tonight, just because of this post!

Thank you!  I had some help from a gal over at my other favorite name site - Behind the Name - she gave me a similar lecture ;-). It's been an adventure,  but we actually chose your suggestion of Maren for the mn! It's pretty, I love the meaning, and it also has a Western counterpart which also has a lovely meaning! I realized after talking with enough people that using a Japanese name is an extremely uncommon choice for non-Japanese parents. Which is really too bad... the more I learn about Japanese names, the more I think us Westerners should take some notes! However,  Maren is just perfect for bridging the cultural gap, you know? So... Thank you, and thank you again! I'm sure someday our little Alexandra Maren will be thankful for your advice as well!

P.S. if you haven't already, check out  Behind the Name... it's addicting!

We are going with the mah-REN pronunciation, but that is because we are actually borrowing the Japanese meanings of "genuine; truth"(ma) and "lotus"(ren) with ren acting as an honor for my mothers. The fact that Maren also has a lovely meaning - "of the sea" - in Western culture which also speaks to us just makes it perfect! -

I think I come from a long line of name jumblers...  my cats, dogs, and occasionally even my fiance have all been called "Elaina" repeatedly. Of course,  Elaina is my two year old,  so I'm yelling that nearly constantly ;-). My grandma was a lister, as well. She'd regularly go through four or five names before getting to yours.

I still think Evelyn and Madeline are adorable, but I wanted chime in that I love your suggestion of Evangeline - pronounced 'lean'!! I think it is perfect with Madeline - pronounced 'lyn'!

I really like Elizabeth with Cecilia. I think if you played a bit with Leah - for example, Annaleah, you could make a good sibset while keeping the nn Leah

The nn appeal is undeniable; my hope is that Alexandra is a name that will grow with her! Thank you for posting :-).

Mine, too! And I have very knowledgeable posters from this site and Behind the Name to thank for Maren. I would never have discovered it on my own! Thanks for your input :-).

Because you aren't using nicknames,  I think it's possible you might find some difficulty using Madeline and Evelyn together. I would have difficulty calling both names together, and would likely find myself calling the wrong name when distracted or distressed. This may not be an issue for you, but the names really are very matchy. Using nicknames like Maddie and Evie would be a necessity for me! That said, Evelyn and Madeline are just about the sweetest sibset I've ever heard (IMO).

Of the other names, I like Natalie most. I dislike Melanie paired with Madeline, but I can't say why.

Thank you. As pretty as the Magdalene related names are, I just don't think we will go with one. Right now, we are considering Alex- names, and I am still pushing for an -issa name (I just love Clarissa, I wish Dad did...sigh). I appreciate your taking the time to weigh in, though!

We've been debating Alexa, Alexis, or Alexandra... I listed those in the order I like, Dad is exactly opposite, lol. All the names really are more popular than we'd wanted, but we like them. I keep waiting for the 2013 top 2000 list to come out!

I just want to say again how much I appreciate all the helpful advice and input I have received from this forum. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to post. Baby naming is hard! And unfortunately friends and family are rarely the people to provide you with constructive feedback.... Also, I am still battling internet issues, so I apologize again for delays in my replies. Wow, just thank you, thank you everyone! :)

Thank you for posting! I've been wondering about the use of "Ren" as a name, not having any experience with the Japanese culture and language. I love the recommendations you've posted, but I want to ask - do the names you've listed, like Maren, mean both parts of the word (i.e. "Ma" - truth, genuine and "ren" - lotus)? Or does combining the two parts result in just the meanings you've listed after each name? n

I was not aware of the disorder. Maybe Alexis then. Dad loves the idea of having an Alex, and I don't particularly like Alexandra. I do like many of the names you've suggested, but Dad is hard to convince. I honestly felt a thrill of victory with the Alex/Ren concession, lol. I will be running your offerings by him, just in case ;-) Thank you!

Wow! Lots of information! I have yet to do more than read through the newest posts, but my internet provider is working on the server for our areas, making the internet spotty. However, Dad LOVES Ren, and we've been playing with fn to go with it. Right now, Alexia Ren is being tried out. I will run some of the new suggestions by him, see if anything catches! In the meantime... thoughts on Alexia Ren? g

I have been without internet all day, so I apologize for not responding. I will take a closer look at what you ask have added, and give a more in-depth response tomorrow.... it's blazing hot in my house and me and the two year old are posted in front of the fan, falling asleep!
