I'm a no-nickname Katherine, my sister-in-law is a no-nickname Catherine, and my grandmother-in-law is a no-nickname Kathryn! It gets confusing sometimes, haha.
I did have a nickname growing up that I gave myself that my family and close friends called me (not one of the normal nicknames for Katherine), but all other people have always called me Katherine.
Sometimes people I've just met have tried to call me by a nickname, but I correct them and it's not an issue after that.
I love my name and would highly recommend it in its full form!
I've posted on here a couple of times and got some great suggestions from you all, so I'd like to announce that our son, Simon Archer, was born on March 24. We've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the name so far!
With regard to this blog post, I, too, have been obsessed with names since I was a child. It's an odd feeling to finally have a little person with a name that I picked out! I have no explanation as to why I've always been interested in names, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
Thanks everyone for your opinions in the last thread. Sorry I'm being cryptic about our last name, I'm just weird about revealing too much online. You all hit a lot of the points we have been considering. It's kind of odd that almost all the names my husband and I agree on end in N. I guess that's the one style we have in common. My husband will be happy about all the support for Gideon since that seems to be his favorite on our list. I'll be sure to check back in and let you know what we decide once we meet the little guy!
Hello All, I posted a few months back about the baby boy I'm expecting and got some really good feedback and suggestions. I'll be having this baby very, very soon (I'm overdue actually) and I'd like some last minute opinions. We're taking a list of names to the hospital rather than deciding on one, but I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on our list, as well as which names go best together. Our last name is a common male first name starting with S. Our list: Simon (the current frontrunner) Harrison Lincoln Gideon Archer Alternates (one of us loves the name, but the other doesn't): Tristan Elliott Gavin Some of these names are being considered mainly as middle names, but I'd like to hear input on them anyway. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for all your great suggestions! It's amazing how many good names have to be taken off the table because of a random bad association or because a close family member already has it. Patrick and Nicholas are names that I really like, but we each have one male cousin. One is Patrick and the other is Nicholas. Alas. Your suggestions reinvigorated our name discussion, which was helpful. So far we've added Owen, Evan, Isaac, Elliott, and Lincoln to the list of possibles. I'm not in love with all of them, but we'll see how they feel in a couple of months. It's funny to me that names seem to be one of the few subjects that everyone has a strong opinion about. I've spent hours and hours thinking about names since I was a kid and my husband hasn't thought about them probably for one hour total, but we have equally strong preferences. I'm thrilled to have this forum to entertain my obsession!
Hello all, I don't know if anyone will remember me, but I posted several months ago with a baby boy name dilemma, which at the time was purely hypothetical. I'm back for more advice because now I'm pregnant with a boy, due in March, and the problem isn't so hypothetical anymore. My original problem was that I seem to only like boy names that are surnames, such as Harrison, Archer, and Cooper. However, our last name is a common male first name beginning with S. My husband maintains that it would our sons would constantly be called by our last name out of confusion, so I've agreed to save my favorite names for the middle name spot. As far as strictly first names go, I prefer names like Oliver, Oscar, and Sebastian, while my husband prefers Christopher, Logan, and Peter. So far we've only agreed on Simon, and possibly Tristan (though we have a good friend by that name that I don't really want to use as a namesake). I'd like to have more than one and a half options to take into the delivery room though, so any suggestions would appreciated! Also as far as name pairings go, which middle name goes best with Simon? Our list of possibilities include: Archer, Harrison, Carlisle, and Randolph (all family names). Thanks for your opinions!
Thanks for all the input! I hope it didn't sound like I would use a name that my husband didn't like. He has vetoed many other names that are less surname-y (Oliver, Oscar, Elliott, Solomon, etc) and has not vetoed the ones I mentioned. So, he also likes them, but is conflicted about using them. The two other names that he hasn't vetoed are Tristan and Simon. If I used Harrison (also a family name, btw) I assume it would get shortened to Harry even if I don't want it to, which has given me pause because of the possible Hairy Lastname sound. That would help with the problem I mentioned though. I'm glad that the Archer/Bowman connection is well-received. It is so funny to me that Bowman is perceived as an interesting middle name possibility. There are so many Bowmans where I'm from that I have a hard time seeing it as anything but boring. Perhaps I should reconsider it for my middle name list though! The hyphenated last name does seem like the only foolproof way of avoiding this problem, but I just have an irrational bias against hyphenated last names. Perhaps these surname names are best relegated to the middle name position, which is ok since they're meaningful family names. At least he and I seem to agree on girl names... Hazel, Lily, and Violet are the current frontrunners. lucubratrix: I've never heard the name Darklis before, but it definitely seems like a legitimate name (there are multiple on facebook). It seems to be a Romany/Gypsy name and the best reference I can find to it is on a list here: http://www.infernaldreams.com/names/Europe/Eastern/Romany.htm Not sure how reliable that source is and I can't find anything about pronunciation.
Hello! Longtime lurker here. We're finally trying for our first child, so I can't wait any longer to start discussing names! Our last name is a common male first name starting with S. The problem is that my favorite boys first names are also last names (Harrison, Archer, and Cooper). My husband thinks that it is cruel to use last names as first names because they'll always be mistakenly called by our last name. Apparently this has always been a problem for him even though his first name is Eric. So, what do you think? Would it be cruel to use those names? Secondly, one reason I love Archer is that Bowman is a family name. However, I can't tell if that's a cute or lame idea. Opinions are appreciated. I'm sure I'll have lots more questions in the future, but these are the ones I can't get off my mind. Thanks!
Hello everyone! Long time lurker here... This post is really interesting and I can't wait to look into it more tomorrow when I have more time. I hope you don't mind if I ask an off topic question right now. We're finally trying for a baby so it seems like a good time to ask somethig that's been bothering me for a while. All of the boy names I like seem to be surnames (Harrison, Archer, and Cooper are the leaders) but the problem is that our last name is a common first name starting with S. My husband maintains that it would be cruel to use those names because people are always calling him by his last name because they confuse his two names. His first name is Eric though so I don't think it makes any difference because people will be confused either way. So what do you think? Is it cruel to use those names? Subquestion: One reason I like Archer is because Bowman is a family name and I like Archer as a play on that name. Is that cute or lame? Thanks
@JB My source is People magazine http://tvwatch.people.com/2010/03/05/spoiler-the-office-how-jim-and-pams-baby-got-its-name/ which I found via my source for all things Office: http://www.officetally.com/
Any rabid Office fans have probably already read this, but the name Cecelia Marie (this is the spelling they're using) was Jenna Fischer's (the actress who plays Pam) choice. Cecelia is the name of her niece that was just born and Marie is Jenna's middle name, which I think is sweet.
