One other thing my husband didn't like about Sam was Forrest Gump is a "slow" character in a movie, and Samwise Gamgee is a "slow" character in a book/movie (Lord of the Rings). But I think that's a stretch considering the number of other awesome Sams there are out there.
Also, interesting about how we picture our new boy: I think your definition of what we visualize is spot on. I might do some more looking based in the "rugged individualist" vein.
