This post reminds me a bit of Laura's post on Harry Potter name translations. Fun stuff! I love that this comment section has turned into Duggar speculation! I should have checked here first, but I wrote a post about it at Babble, and would love to see what you guys think of my picks! (http://blogs.babble.com/babys-first-year-blog/2011/11/09/naming-duggar-20/) Also, as a side note, some of you may remember me asking for baby naming help back in May. We were trying to find a name for our son and I was so disappointed that Quinn was turning into a girls name. At the time our other option was Jude, but my husband wasn't sold. In the end we named him Tate Cameron. It wasn't my favorite name until I saw the kid, and then I couldn't imagine naming him anything else. Anyway. Thanks again for all your help!
My heart just broke. My husband and I have been leaning more and more towards Quinn for our son that is due in 3 weeks! Sob.
Just wanted to thank all of you for your thoughtful feedback on our Jude/Quinn dilemma. I think I am drawn more to Quinn because my husband likes it so much (which, let me tell you has not been the case for any name I have brought up for the last 7 months). We haven't decided anything yet, but your advice has been SO HELPFUL. I will make sure to come back and let you know what the name ends up being in the end. Thanks again!
@Yet Another Guest, I am torn too! @EVie + zoerhenne, Rose, I feel like TV shows are turning the name far more feminine than it truly is. Between Quinn Morgendorfer, and Quinn on Glee I am afraid the feminine/masculine balance is shifting. I also am not completely sold on the Quinn/Cameron sound combo.... @lucubratrix, I like Jude Cameron better flow wise as well. And thanks for all the male vs female stats! It really illustrates the balance. I actually don't feel uncomfortable with how the numbers look, but more with how Quinn seems to be much more present as a girls name in popular culture, which could continue to shift the male / female balance. @Aybee, I would probably agree, it's similar to Taylor. @hyz nli + lucubratrix, izzy, PennyX Do you think it would sound more masculine (and flow better) with a solidly masculine middle name? Something like Quinn David or Quinn John... ? @Juli, I don't care for Quintus, but possibly Quinton... I just don't like how people in Utah (where I live) say names that in "ton". They often drop the T. So Layton become Lay-en and Quinton would be Quin-en. @Amy3, Thanks for the info on Quin's quick rise in popularity for girls! Do you all think it would sound more masculine (and flow better) with a solidly masculine middle name? Something like: Quinn David Quinn John Quinn Bryan Quinn James Quinn Stephen (my hubs name)
I am a long time lurker... I used to comment more often but haven't found the time to keep up the the lively discussions you guys always have. So, after a lifetime of making baby name lists I am actually pregnant. I am not just pregnant I am 33 weeks along with a little boy. My husband and I have gone through what feels like a million names, and think we have whittled it down 2 choices Quinn and Jude. The middle name will be Cameron (to honor a deceased friend of my husband's). We like the idea of a one syllable name because the middle has three syllables and so does our last name that is similar to Patterson. Some of the girls names that we like are Charlotte, Elsa, and Nora. I think we would have already gone settled on Quinn at this point because my husband really likes it and I love how unique it is, but I am really worried that it's turning into a girl name. I have a nightmare that I will name my son a name that in 20 years will sound completely feminine (like the Leslies, Courtneys, and Stacys of that past). I basically want to know your opinion about the masculinity / femininity of Quinn and whether you prefer it to Jude. Thanks in advance! This whole naming thing is so much more stressful than I thought it would be.
@kate b, I absolutely think it is your choice what to go by, and that Kate is a perfectly reasonable choice. Katrina is related to Katherine, the route of Kate anyway. I went by Maddy in high school (other people called me that, and it stuck) and made the decision to go by Madeline once I got to college. I still run into people that know me as Maddy, and it just signals to me that they have known me a long time :D
I love my name. It has become very common, but I am still a loner in my age group (I am 25). Growing up, I loved that there was never another Madeline in my class. I did however always have a problem with pronunciation, it's Mad-a-lin, and people often call me Mad-a-line, which grates on me like nothing else. I don't mind if they say it that way after reading it once, and I correct them. But, it drives me insane when people just keep calling me that without asking if it's correct, and without giving me a chance to correct them. I also don't like that people try to call me "Maddy" without asking if I care for it. Which I don't. At the end of the day, I love my name. I love that it is distinct, and I think it is quite pretty.
