I've had my names picked out for years - J0hn Patr1ck for a boy, and Sus@nn@h Cla1re for a girl. And this is the first time I've told a soul. J0hn is my father's first name (he goes by his middle), as well as his father's first name. Patr1ck was my great-grandfather & great-great-grandfather's middle names (great-g went by it though), as well as a variation of my mother's middle name (Patr1cia) and the name that her parents had picked out for the second son they never got to have. (Whew!) My mother's name is Suz@nne. I just like Cla1re. Because of the family history in these names, I want to see my relatives' faces when they meet my child who is named for them or for people they love. While my names are not unusual or exciting, they are very special to me, and I want to hold on to that secret for a while.

I plan to name my first son Jack - as a nickname for his formal name, which will be John. John is my father's and grandfather's name, and so I'd like to name a son after them. However, we have had problems with both my father and grandfather sharing the same name. The most notable was when my father's dr called his stepmother, thinking that she was his wife... there are two John Lastnames in the phone book! So calling him Jack might eliminate some confusion (or not, who knows?). And I just like Jack better. But I would never name a child a nickname as an official name. You want Justice Suzanne Smith, not Justice Suzie Smith. Or CEO James Williams, not CEO Jamie Williams. What is cute on a child is not all that cute on a nameplate. I think that John/Jack and Mary/Molly are harder than Daniel/Dan because the nickname isn't just right there in the beginning of the name. Who knows how we got Jack from John or Molly from Mary? How did Peggy come from Margaret? No idea.

I'm going with Vivian and variations...Vivien, Vivianne, Vivienne, etc. Its trendy because of Brangelina but very much a classic, "real" name. Its easy for parents to use and not have people say, OH, Brad and Angie, as opposed to something like Shiloh. It fits with the group of Olivia, Sophie, Isabella. Its a little old fashioned without be old. And Joe is my runner up, for Joe the plumber, Joe Six Pack, and most importantly - Joe Jonas. Jonas or Jonah might show up as well. Others that I don't think will be tops but will be up there include Maverick, Malia, Piper, Edward & Bella. I think it is too early for the supporting Twilight cast names, but Edward and (Isa)Bella are already out there.
