Yes, in parts of South India people don't use surnames (see http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/india-country-profile.html or http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/no-last-name-us-universities/). There is a professor at my school whose name is simply Arvind... just Arvind. He seems to do alright without a surname - he's got the first Google hit for 'Arvind', publishes under Arvind, etc. Don't know how he fills out online forms, though.

@Yolanda: A lot of the muppets, with the exception of Zoe, have names that are very anachronistic - so much so that we often associate them only with the muppet - think Elmo, Grover, Ernie, Bert, Oscar... Try running the name voyager on these. With the exception of Oscar, which is finally starting to come back despite the guy in the trash can, all of them have basically the same trend.

I met a Rigel once - a female one! She was probably in her 40s.

@Bionic Woman - you have the most amazing family names, I'm kind of jealous... almost all of those are on my list of favorites.

I saw a little girl on another forum whose middle name is Elocin... that's Nicole backwards! (I recognized it immediately, because I'm a Nicole ^_^) I think the mother's name was Nicole - I can't decide if this is weird or cute... I certainly wouldn't do it, though.

I know a Spenser! (with an s) ...born a few years after 1986, too. I never realized it was a trend - I always thought his parents just liked the letter 's' (his last name starts w/ S and his brother's name starts w/ S).

I vote Arthur, no question. Archer seems trendy and made-up to me, while Arthur is timeless and classic.

@Beth - what university do you teach at? I'm just curious, because I'm a student a very pro-Obama university and I know a Maverick, and the name isn't *that* common... perhaps we're in the same place?
