Just got a chance to pop on for today and caught up with all the comments - Thanks to all for weighing in on our choices! zoerhenne - thanks for the nice combo ideas. And actually we DID hit on Miles Cyrus the other night at dinner when thinking through some combos, and had a good laugh over it. :) I'll be talking this over with my husband this weekend, now with lots of great feedback. Will let you all know what we decide!
A few responses: We have SOME Irish blood on both sides of the family and my husband's last name can be of either Irish or English origins, so Declan should sound good with it...that said, we don't identify ourselves as Irish since we each have several other strands of various European heritage and our families have been several generations in the US. hyz - My husband greatly prefers Leon to Leo, which is why we wouldn't go straight to that though we would use it as a nn. The feedback has already been helpful, as I see Ewan falling off our list...it was hanging onto the bottom as it was, and various points here have confirmed some hesitations I had. Emilyrae - thanks...it has worn well from childhood to adulthood. :)
Posted before I saw the later posts - Laneyo, I totally agree with you on this: "I'm one of those name geeks who think a middle name should have some sort of meaning and there should only be one of them." Since we wouldn't use the mn much at all, I'd like it to have some meaning for us/him. And we don't want to honor someone in one of our families and not the other, since we don't know if there will be future children...
Thanks for the feedback so far - nice to hear our mn ideas aren't too "out there." I hope you're right (RobynT and knp) that Miles isn't going to shoot up to the top of the charts...I think it's my husband's secret favorite from our list. Agree that Ewan has some probably pronunciation issues, though I wish it didn't! Emilyrae, I actually LOVE the nn Leo if we go with Leon, and I (at least) would definitely use it. And yes, I believe Declan is pronounced Deck-lan. As for HS Musical, I've heard of the Troy connection but have never seen it, so don't have those associations myself...I wonder if many people would (and if that's then a strike against the name)?
Well, NEs, there are quite a few naming challenges on the table right now! For those not too fatigued, here's another... I posted several months ago with some early name ideas my husband and I had for our 1st child. We now know that it's a boy, and as he's due in just 3 weeks we should really get down to naming him. Our naming styles are quite different and we've had a hard time coming up with a list we both like - see our current top 5 below. (1) Thoughts on choosing among them? (2) Middle name ideas? We've had so much trouble coming up with these, we haven't spent much time on middles. One thought we have is to use York since we're both from NY and our families both still live there (though we don't)...I quite like Leon York, for example. Another idea of my husband's is to use Aron (my name spelled backwards) as a tribute to me since the baby will have his last name but I kept my maiden name (Troy Aron could work). Current Top 5: Leon Troy Declan Ewan Miles (but is it too popular and/or destined to be the next Caden?) To give an idea of our respective styles...Some of my top names that he vetoed: Theo(my favorite), Anton, Silas, and Cyrus. Some of his favorites that I vetoed: Thor (his favorite), Ajax, Chance, and Gavin (which I like but is too popular for me). Thanks for any advice or opinions!
Blythe - It's interesting that you put Leon on your list of rising boy's names. Why is that - have you come across more little Leon's? My husband and I are expecting a boy in July and like this name, but the few times we've mentioned it have gotten the reaction mostly that it's a stuffy old man name. We obviously don't agree (with think it's a potential come-back name that's both strong and cool) and may go with it anyway - I'm just wondering what made you put it on your list!
Yay! I'm so excited that the book will be available before my due date (July 24).
Hi All - I read this blog faithfully (and very much enjoy it!) but rarely post, since I'm a relatively new NE and don't have as much to add as to learn. Anyway, just wanted to post a new baby alert: Aidan Margaret (no sibs) I know Aidan is a current top boy's name, but have folks seen it for a girl before??
Oops, just saw that there were already comments on Seraphina from yesterday, above! Sorry, folks...
Well, the Garner/Affleck baby name is finally out: Seraphina Rose Elizabeth. Interesting choice, though I don't love it and to me it doesn't go very well with Violet. I'm also not a fan of two middle names unless the parents are from countries/cultures where that is common. It's lot more elegant than the rumored "Chase Milan," though! What do you think? And do we assume they'll call her "Sera" (pronounced "Sara")?
Thanks to all who gave feedback on my naming questions! Many of you have confirmed my fears on constant mispronunciation of Avon, so sadly I think that one is out (or relegated to a middle name). And I'm quite sad to let Leif go but think we must due to the "F" last name. Despite a few negative associations with Leon, I continue to think it's a strong name, classic but not common (possibly ready for a comeback? though we want to avoid top 50 names so that's not a swaying factor) that would work well for a child or adult. We/he could use the nn Leo if we want to. Thanks RobynT for agreeing this is a great name! PrairieDawn - I love Sylvie Lorelei (actually a name my husband had liked as a first name!), and Sylvie Avonlea is pretty and intriguing since it would allow us to use two of our current top choices. BTW I also had Silas as a favorite boy's name, but my husband is on the fence...maybe I can sway him to reconsider. Again, thanks to all! Luckily we still have several months to ponder.
My husband and I are expected our first child in July, and not finding much overlap on the names we like. So far our top mutually-liked names are: GIRL: Ada, Sylvie, Ivy, Avonlea BOY: Leon, Leif, Archer, Avon (By way of explanation, "Avon" is pronounced with a soft "A," not a hard "A" like the makeup company - my husband's family is from a town of this name so that's the connection...we thought softening it to Avonlea for a girl would be nice and my sisters and I have always loved the Anne books by L.M. Montgomery, so there would be connections to both families!) Questions: (1)General thoughts, preferences, or alternate suggestions? (2) Can anyone suggest a middle name for Sylvie? Our last name is fairly generic, has two syllables, and goes with many styles of naming so that's not an issue. (We're thinking of "York" as a middle name since we're both from NY, but it seems masculine so probably only with the boy's names.) (3) Since our last name begins with "F," do you think that the first name "Leif" is out because people will hear the "f" sounds together and think his name is "Lee"? (Prarie Dawn, I notice you are also considering the name Sylvie!)
