Mekiki-- Sorry- I was away from the board for a bit and didn't respond. I adore Clara, as much as everyone else here does! I think of "The Nutcracker" and little Clara dancing with her doll on Christmas. Classic, feminine and just right. My son's great grandfather is Henry- my son and his wife have three months to go, and they both think the decision will be down to the wire. They both are working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week for the rest of the summer and have an almost 2 year old...so I tend to agree with them. I told them that when Laura's new book comes out on July 7th, I will have it airlifted to them.:) Anyway, kudos to you on choosing such a versatile name. Clara can be a Supreme Court judge-or a ballerina.

Mekiki- Interesting questions.......I think sometimes we do try too hard to find the "special" name. My son likes his great grandfather's name; yet, it seems too popular, in his circle. And then, my nephew and his family (non-urban) find Henry (the name) a strange name. They suggest Max or Sam -masculine and modern, yet still not quite their taste. My air-conditioner guy is named Igor- and hopes his grandchild will be named his name ,as tradition warrants. I suggested Elio to my son today(based on a suggestion here)- And I think he may think I am over the edge, or perhaps, on the money. It is what fits for each family. It is such a big responsibility and joy to name a child, isn't it? Okay, so what is your lovely daughter's name? I know I will love it.

How about Simone Helena? I believe Helen/ Helena mean light... I'm not sure if you wanted the meaning of "light" or only the feeling. You have many lovely options!

I know only two Ericas, both about 60. Each is very successful-one a state poet laureate- the other a noted medical researcher. So, I would venture, the name has heft and history without being date-stamped.It is nms, I prefer Elodie, for instance.. but, that is really a different style and time.I do like spunky names(like Roxanne) and Erica is that. It just doesn't ring my chime.

Elizabeth T.,Amy G., Zoerhenne--thank you for sharing-you made me laugh back :). Now I can go on worrying about the global economy, barespots in my lawn and why my granddaughter wears a preponderance of brown.I'm not really devastated on that last,I lived through the grunge era with teenagers. But really, are cheerful Hanna Andersson dresses and a hairbow now and then, so bad? Eek, I am turning into a grandmother!.. I will probably get my due when the new grandson is named Hieronymous Philbrick Davio- he'll be the only one in his class.

Folks, perhaps I need an intervention. I really had other problems on my mind, but, I was awakened( deep dream state, I think) to hear my son tell me that his new baby was named Isabelle.I kept trying to go back to sleep because I knew they were having a son and although I love the name Isabelle---I loved it much more 7 or 8 years ago.. and this was definitely not a son's name... Anyway,I feel-in the cold light of day- that my dream(nightmare?) was precipitated by the Guest who asked the trenchant question, "What is wrong with lovely (not kre8tiv)trendy names?" Excellent query. I have no answer- other than I would want my grandchild- or child to be ahead of or beyond the curve of popularity, so that she is not one of many. I admit to liking special, distictive names( along with all NE's)-alas! Having said that, I awakened realizing that Isabelle is a beautiful name and if they still want to use it--it is new to me, I swear, as of today. In my dream, though, they used the same middle name for the second child. Who does that? And again, this baby will be a boy. I need to dream a new dream(nightmare?). It is not easy being a grandmother who is a name enthusiast, in case anyone cares. All help is appreciated!

Jessica- How about Gilead John Michael? Sounds very European to me...and nice with George Oliver Lloyd.. I do forget though-is Gilead a hard or soft "G"? That would affect the flow a bit..

Mama Dell- Do you like Ginger as nn for Virginia? My son (a chef) promoted it for his daughter. (He lost.) Although, he probably would have championed Rosemary and Laurel for the same reasons! For his son-to-be, perhaps Oregano?

Mama dell- I love Lorna..makes me think of Lorna Doone(not the cookie!)...and my son loves Virginia.. I have a small problem with the "virgin" teasing though. And Rosemary I feel that it is underused and lovely. It might be my favorite of your strong choices. My middle name is Suzanne, but I prefer Susannah.. My grandfather used to sing Ol' Susannah to me.Julianna , I like, but it seems like it is on an upswing.Priscilla- my first thought is Presley-how embarassing!

Another Amy--I agree with you about the different naming styles of the children...Lacton reminds me of lactate and their pronunciation is counter-intuitive.And Fisher and Finn might make Maia feel left out of the water, so to speak. How about another tradesman name? Slater coes to mind...

emily rae- Julian David has a nice cadence and both names are strong classics. I was just thinking Of Julian today, as a suggestion for a mn of a baby I am helping to name.

Melanie1--I love Emmy Jo's wide-ranging suggestions..Lucinda Elspeth does honor both original names and is lovely and distinctive.I can also see using Elnora as an alternative--then, I think, the nn Nora comes natually to people.

Phillipa- Building on Zoerhenne's suggestions-how about Sylvie Therese-with appropriate accent marks... I also love Fiona Maeve .. Grace is lovely-- I wonder if there is another form of it to set it apart?

TxAmy---- I think Averil, suggested by two inspired NEs (Eo and Hyz), is terrific. Amelia and Averil--close, but not repetitive in cadence or ending syllable. Beautiful names for your lovelies! I am on tenterhooks-- keep us apprised, please.

TxAmy- I have walked in your shoes. I had a father-in-law who wondered if "the color" of our soon-to be- adopted daughter would not fit in with our white -bread community. My ex-husband handled that well, but it was a clue to me that I needed to be mindful in naming our daughter. I wanted Allegra(!) or Amalia(!)-sound familiar? or Alice( family name)...but decided on Alicia because it is a bonafide Italian( husband's family), Colombian( daughter's origin) and classic American name, which played well in suburbia-most importantly. This was long ago, by the way. But still, I understand your dilemma.. Since Amelia goes by 2 names- how about something like Adah Jane or Ava Kate for your new little one.? Very different from the beautiful Amelia, but lovely in its own right. I also love many of the suggestions you have gotten already. I particularly like Aubrey, Amabel and your fav- Avonlea.... I would make the argument with my Mom that the same first and last initial are sufficient to mark you as a clan. I wish you much wisdom, patience and creativity in your decision.

sme- Oliver is#97 in Massachusetts and is popular all over New England. There are 2 on my street-one is 19, one is 4. I almost named my son Oliver 30+ years ago-love the name. If it allays your concern, I think most of the Olivers just live in my neighborhood in Boston;).Their brothers are Henry, Charles and sometimes, Liam. One has a sister named Rox@nne, which I like for its spunk.

Sharon- Gabriel has been suggested and I will second it.Henry sounds great with your girls' names, to me. And how about Louis as the first name, rather than the second? Louis Michael has dignity. Jeffrey is just nms.

Hyz and Prairie Dawn-- I mentioned a while back that my son sometimes calls his daughter "Marina"--and he does it with a rolled R.. I think it started because their nanny speaks Spanish and many of the kitchen staff at his restaurant do as well. Marin is sort of a mascot..and I love the loving way it is pronounced. He seems to call her that when she is cuddling on his lap or falling asleep. It is a softer sound.

Sharon- I love Theo. My daughter and her brand new, musician husband are planning to name their someday son Thelonius and call him Theo.
