The Kim & Kanye Baby Name Round-Up

Jun 21st 2013

If you've been following the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West baby name news this week you may be suffering the same kind of whiplash we are. First, there was no name announced.  Then, there was the "leaked" name, a very plausible Kaidence Donda West (a variation on the fastest-rising baby name of the 2000s decade and Kanye's mom's name).  And now, the "official" word on this biggest celebrity baby name story of the year (so far), is that the baby's full name is North West.

North on its own is a somewhat unusual choice, particularly for a girl.  (Directional word names like West and North tend to be given to boys while seasonal word names such as Autumn and Summer tend to be given to girls).  However, in this case, the baby name is not about the first name alone, but about the name as a whole, first name North paired with surname West, clearly an intentional concept name, not dissimilar from Shanda Lear and even Phillip Phillips.

What do you think of this latest celebrity baby name? Weigh in here or at our sister site NameCandy.com.

As a native Northwesterner, I have mixed feelings about this name. This part of the country is a marvelous place to live, and I feel it has gained a certain cultural cache lately. This name would come off as incredibly cool to me if it were chosen by practically any other couple on Earth, but as it stands, it's irking me. And this is coming from a Kanye fan (his music, not his attitude or life choices).

I think the name North is okay, but I don't like it with West.  It sounds like an airline  or a fragment.

I really don't like it. Maybe if North wasn't paired with a directional last name it would be ok, though I still wouldn't be crazy about it. And it does remind me of Northwest Airlines, though that no longer exists.

I'm surprised: I do like it, and the name isn't my style at all.  North has some decent nickname possiblities like Nora.  I don't love the combination of North West, but when you are a celeb kid, your name is going to stand out even if you are Jane Doe.

I quite like North! But then, I'm also a fan of lesser-used calendrical names (November, Sunday) and nature names (Briar, Calyx - in fact, I'd really hoped that Kimye would go with that name, albeit with Kardashianesque alternate spelling Kaelix). And North can shorten to the lovely classic Nora or cute and spunky Nori.

And the choice of North doesn't surprise me one bit from these two - what does surprise me, if it's accurate, is the decision not to give her the middle name Donda. Kanye's mother is such a tremendous presence in his self-concept that it really surprises me that he wouldn't be insistent on honoring her with the name of his firstborn daughter.

What I don't love is pairing it with the surname West, especially if they've indeed chosen to forgo a middle name. That pushes it from creative and unusual to just plain gimmicky.

I've seen multiple comments about North being nicknameable to Nora, which reinforces my dislike of the first-last combo this poor child has been saddled with: Nora West would've been a far preferable combo, memorable without going way over the top into ridiculousness like her (reported) actual name does.

My other objection: am I the only one who still automatically pairs North with Oliver?

I doubt if many people under 35 or 40 (and some older than that) will remember him or know who he is.  But, that kept creeping into my mind when we considered Oliver.

I like North West, it is great for a future little female rapper, and unlike a lot of rappers these days at least she can say that her name is her real name. I can defiantly see North West in the charts in 15 to 20 years time.

I think It is a totally unique and beautiful name. How the two agreed upon it, is beyond us. They both rock...  Let them drool over their new glory!
