The Most Popular Baby Names in America for 2013

May 9th 2014

The Social Security Administration has released the official rankings of the most popular baby names in America for 2013, and there's big news at the top: Jacob has fallen out of #1 spot for the first time in the 21st Century.

Meet the new champion, Noah, and the rest of the top names for American boys and girls.

RANK   BOYS   GIRLS
1  Noah  Sophia
2  Liam  Emma
3  Jacob  Olivia
4  Mason  Isabella
5  William  Ava
6  Ethan  Mia
7  Michael  Emily
8  Alexander  Abigail
9  Jayden  Madison
10  Daniel  Elizabeth

Noah and the new #2 boy's name Liam are both part of the soaring sound category I've identified as "raindrop names." Meanwhile Jayden and Aiden both fell, Aiden slipping out of the top 10.

You can browse the full 2013 popularity list, complete with comparisons to last year's rankings, in our Top 1,000 Baby Names of 2013 page. Stay tuned for the full data and more name news and analysis, including the fastest-rising names of the year

Noah? Wow! I'm surprised! Noah seems to be a perennial classic, and I'm wondering what caused it to reach #1 status? Am I missing some pop culture reference? Not only was Jacob demoted, Liam moved up ahead in usage, too!

I can't believe my daughter's name still hasn't cracked the top 1000.

Our 14-year-old's name is now in the top 40. *groan* You bunch of hipsters! You're ruining it! *shakes fist like an old lady*

I think the Social Security list is misleading, because it doesn’t take alternative spellings into account, and for some names (I only did girls’ names, assuming that there were fewer alt. spellings for boys.), it makes a big difference.  The first appreciable difference is with Zoey, which moves from 24 on the Soc. Sec. list to 7, when you include “Zoe.” Aubrey moves to the top ten as well, from 18 to 8, when you count “Aubri” “Aubrie,” and “Aubree.” Madelyn moves from 68 spots to 13, taking into account all its variants. The biggest jumper, though, is Adalynn, moving a full 125 spaces, from 173 to 48. So, here's the top 50, with varients:

1. Sophia

2.     Emma

3.     Isabella

4.     Olivia

5.     Emily
