- Meanings and history of the name Abdiel
A variant transcription of Avdiel, this name apparently means "servant of God" in Hebrew (thus making it a cognate of the Arabic name Abdullah). This name is mentioned only once in the Bible, namely in 1 Chronicles 5:15 (where it is the name of a man of the Tribe of Gad). In literature, more specifically in Milton's epic "Paradise Lost", it is known as being the name of the faithful seraph who withstood Satan when he urged the angels to revolt. Last but not least, Abdiel is also mentioned in the 'Sefer Raziel HaMalakh.'
