Having two syllables gives Anton a sense of formality without being frilly. Ending in the the currently popular "n" for boys and having a familiar "a" sound, Anton could be posed for potential popularity. Its potential downfall could be it's hard NT cluster which is what inevitably gives it its formality and Germanic/Slavic feel. It's a personal favorite of mine and the only Antons I've been accquainted with have been in my family tree... and the novel "Summer of my German Soldier."
- Personal experiences with the name Anton
We named our son Anton. It's a strong handsome name, short, easy to pronounce, easy to spell and has a vintage feel to it. A real name, not a made up modern name, derived from the ancient roman name Antonius meaning "praise worthy". Best of all it's quite rare so he will very well be the only Anton in his class. Its safely fallen off the top 1000 list. I don't agree about the NT cluster sounding harsh, other names with NT like Clinton don't sound Slavic. Anton is a very European name, popular in the Eastern European and northern Scandinavian countries. It's a name that stands alone not needing to be nicknamed, but occasionally we use "Andy". Also a nice rare alternative to popular names such as Mason, Ashton, Landon, Carson etc... That have the same feel, 2 syllables and ending with ON.
I personally adore this name. It is strong and sounds handsome and elegant while also having a modern appeal. This is my number one name to name my son one day.
My grandfather's name was Anton (from Finland/Norway). My uncle is now Anton and goes by Andy. My giant street dog is called Anton now (Spanish pronunciation: (AHN-tone) and it suits him perfectly: calm, masculine, elegant, strong. Beautiful name.
