My 6'5" 18 year old son named Avery, named after his godfather and several male family friends, will definitely tell you it is a male name! With all the beautiful girl names in the world, it puzzles why a parent would want their daughter to have a traditionally masculine name! It is a sophisticated male name and not a particularly pretty female name. Sad! My heart goes out to all those girls who will someday wish they had a feminine name.
I think this name sounds much nicer on a boy. It's a French form of Alfred, and I'm sure you wouldn't name your daughter Alfred, would you? It has a nice, classic, poetic feel to it. I have it on my favorite name list for boys as Avery Harper.
Both Avery and Harper have evolved into girl's names!

Avery Cole is my 2 year old boy's name! It's definitely more geared toward boys than girls, I think.
*don't think that! The name was all boy until someone thought it would be cute on a girl! Keep it boy!My 14 month old is Avery Michael. I think it is a lovely, strong name, perfect for a boy.
My son's name is Benjamin Ayveri. I didn't like the traditional spelling of Avery, but I love the name.
I had a male classmate in school named Avery, which is probably why I prefer this as a boy's name.
My name. Given in 1957. It was difficult to grow up with it and now it is cool. Go figure...(by the way it is a cool name, knowing its meaning).

This traditional male name -- a medieval form of Alfred -- has been climbing to an all-time popularity peak for baby boys. The trick is, it's even more common for girls. Once a name starts to turn feminine, parents of boys usually run in the other direction. But lately, favorites like Jordan and Peyton have been bucking the trend. Cross your fingers that elegant Avery joins them as a two-gender standard.
