My grandfather is named William Freeman but goes by Freeman to all those who know him (apart from us grandchildren who all called him Grandpa Will). He has always been a very key member of his local community and there is a library named after him in the town where he lives.
I named my first son Freeman as we hoped he would be a free thinker and make a difference. It's a strong and clearly masculine name, and has been well accepted at schools and in society. He's living up to his name. I think names are important benchmarks and have subtle effects on the holder.
