Although it sounds distinctly masculine to me, I don't believe I've ever met a little boy named Mackenzie, but I have met many girls named Mackenzie (and variants thereof.)
I am an adult (female) Mackenzie and when I was growing up it was very unusual on both genders. I knew one boy McKenzie and one girl in high school. These days it is much more popular on girls but I think it still works on boys (especially with the nick name "Mack"- most people think I'm a guy). Also many people who don't interact with elementary school age children very often, or who live outside of Anglophone North America, do not get Mackenzie as a first name (especially for girls).
I LOVE this name because I have a really good friend named Mackenzie who is an AMAZING person!
