- Comments and insights on the name Murphy
Murphy was my great-great-grandfather's last name. In 70 years I've met only one other real person (a young man nearly 60 years younger than I am) whose first name is Murphy. When I visited Ireland some years ago, the Irish uniformly considered Murphy an amusing first name. I neither met nor heard of anyone in Ireland whose first name was Murphy.
While Murphy is not entirely unique as a first name, and it's not unusual as a nickname, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more unusual, but not weird, first name.
- Personal experiences with the name Murphy
We named my son Murphy - he's seven now and seems to be surviving the experience. We have run across only one other person with Murphy as a first name - appx 50 yr old man
I was named Murphy, in order to keep my mom's maiden name in the family, as she has 2 sisters. Overall, I enjoy the rarity of the name, having never met another person named Murphy. I am a junior in high school and if you're looking for a different name then everyone else for your child, go with Murphy (;
