Evolution of the Scandinavian Njal, which originated from the Irish Niall, a name derived from the Gaelic néall (cloud) or niadh (champion). The Scandinavians took the name to Normandy, where it was Latinized as Nigellus. The Normans then introduced the name to England, where it became Nigel.
