My godfather was named Rockwell after a character on a TV Western that my father (his older brother) loved growing up in the fifties. My middle name is Rockwell and I'm happy to pass along a family name.
My wife and I also wanted a rare name but had a hard time settling on one that didn't sound too unusual. My last name is Skinner and so anything exotic was out - it needed to be a Celtic or English name to go with such an obviously English-language surname. I was surprised to see that Rocky is such a rare name. I understand that it is primarily a surname but it has been used as a first name historically and comes with the nicknames Rocky and Rock. I have to wonder if the popularity of the Rocky movies in the 80s and 90s limited the use of any similar names.
Personally I see it as a name that can grow with the child: Rocky as a small boy, Rock in adolescence and Rockwell as an adult (if he is a professional like his parents). The name sounds distinguished and despite the reactions I see on some message boards pretty much everyone I've met IRL loves my middle name.
