Originally the transferred use of the surname derived from the place-name Rodney Stoke. The derivation of Rodney is uncertain. Some believe it is from the Anglo-Saxon Rodan-ig (Roda's island). The word stoke is from the Old English stōc (dwelling, place, village). Rodney, in use as a given name since the 18th century, was originally bestowed in honor of the famous admiral Lord Rodney (1719 - 92).
