Sturt comes from the name Sturt's Desert Pea, which was presumably named by the explorer Cahrles Sturt. However, there are quite a few legends conceding the Australian fauna, most including a bloody end, echoing the colour of the flower and explaining the sad legend behind it. The flower is referred to as the "Flower of Blood" by some Koori groups. This title comes from the legend that tells of a young woman who escaped marriage to an elderly gentleman by eloping with her younger lover. The shunned man and some of his friends tracked the couple down after some years and killed them both, as well as the relatives with whom they had lived. Sometime later, the old man returned to the place where he had slain the lovers and found the ground covered with the scarlet flowers that we know as the Sturt's Desert Pea.

Sturt is an Australian name, coming from the desert flower "Sturt's Desert Pea." The Sturt's Desert Pea was named after Charles Sturt, the explorer. It is a strong and masculine name, conjuring up endurance, survival, and victory as few plants, let alone flowers, can survive, much less thrive, in such harsh conditions such as the Australian desert. The Sturt's Desert Pea is furthermore a favourite as it easily adapts to different climates and is a unique, beautiful flower and foliage.
