- Comments and insights on the name Teague
Teague, Taig, Tadhg: In Northern Ireland these names are used as derogatory slurs for Roman Catholics, similar in connotation to calling a black person the n-word. Some Irish nationalists have reclaimed Teague as an ironic self-identifier... but anyone considering this name for their child needs to be aware of the name's "other" meaning.
- Personal experiences with the name Teague
My son's name is Teague. Most people with this name pronounce it as TEEgue. Our son uses the more traditional version of "TAIgue" (like the word "leg"). This is closer to how the original version (TADHG) sounds, though with the Irish accent, that name sounds more like (TIYgue...like "tiger" without the "r"). The Teague spelling is how the English decided the Celtic/Gaelic name should be spelled. Also note that "Taig" and "Teague" are also derogatory terms for an Irish Catholic in Northern Ireland.
To us, TAIgue sounds cooler than TEEgue. Regardless, most people say TEEgue and it takes a bit of time to get them saying it properly. This will follow him forever, I guess, but it'll make a good conversation starting for him in the future. The only nickname we hear is "T" ("TEE"). Maybe he'll be another Mr. T? Anyway, it's fairly unique. If the name confusion scares you, I'd suggest Taigue or Tague as alternates. Those variations are likely super rare or non-existent.
