I named my 2year old daughter as Akilah. I searched for meaning before I could choose name. And so I found Akilah meaning "the intelligent one who reasons" shortened to the name Akilah in Arabic. I could have chosen Akua of same meaning in african But, Akilah sounded a best fit. I like it and I have no fear my daughter is going to be proud of it as she gows older with it

Personal experiences with the name Akilah

Many people are too stereotype out there. I Had so much criticisms from friends just because Akilah name is not African or South African. Even if I explain the meaning they still find it awkward for black south african to give Akilah name to her child.

But, my family liked it and for the fact that its not common. That was ecxactly my intention, I wanted a unique name with the meaning of INTELLIGENT, I even thought of the name "Intelligent" but it was too long and kind of common. So the AKILAH one passed and I love it!

While I greatly admire the meaning of my name, and am proud of it, in the US, people cannot remember it, and in ignorance of my alcohol-free culture, they often resort to calling me "Tequila", after a Mexican alcoholic drink. This happens so often, and seems to me to have the opposite meaning of my name, that I am considering going by some nickname instead.
