A good choice for an increasingly common name but with a different spelling. Christen can be either a male or female name, and as a female name is frequently mistaken for Christian or Kirsten, and the name "Christen" is commonly misspelled.
- Personal experiences with the name Christen
It's my name! It's a much more awesome name than just plain old "Kristin," but parents considering this name should beware: your daughter will get called "Christian" all the time in school (sometimes even by her friends, if they have speech impediments as children sometimes do), and the name will be constantly misspelled. I suggest getting your "Christen" used to a set nickname (like Christy or some variant of it) very soon so she can decide what she wants to go by.
__________
I named my eldest daughter "Christen", and it suits her well. I was originally going to name her "Christie", but my family objected that "Christie" was "too informal", so I set about finding an alternate, more "formal" version of "Christie". I then suggested "Crystal" but was told this was a drug name. Huh? I thought it was a "rock" name and I love collecting rocks. OK, so the name "Kristen" was very popular at the time, & I liked the sound of it. Kristen was too popular though, so after much debate I settled on the same name with a more unconventional spelling, "Christen". My family loved it because it is a "religious" name (though that's not why I chose it), and I liked it because it sounded pretty and there are a lot of nick-names you can derived from it. My daughter goes by "Chris" or "Chrissy", though she likes to have fun, esp. with her more religious friends and tell them her name is "Christ". She does notice that people find it hard to spell her name, and it is often confused with Kirsten or Christian. My Chrissy is pretty and very smart, and when she cuts her hair short, she is sometimes confused for a "young man", which makes it even more confusing when she introduces herself as "Chris", but we both get endless chuckles about that and the questions it must raise. When I think of the name Christen now, I think of a very pretty, unique, and very intelligent person, who is good at writing and possesses a Scientific mind.
