- Meanings and history of the name Deidamia
Comes from Greek, meaning "she who is patient in battle". It is pronounced "dee-i-da-MY-uh". Another form of the name is Diodeme. In Greek mythology, Deidamia was one of the seven daughters of Lycomedes, king of Scyros. At the request of the hero Achilles' mother Thetis, Lycomedes hid Achilles at his court, disguised as a girl to keep him safe from battle. Odysseus, however, found him out and persuaded him to join the Greek forces in the Trojan War. Before this, however, Deidamia and Achilles had became lovers and had a son, Neoptolemus, also called Pyrrhus. He eventually joined his father's forces at Troy but was killed by Orestes.
