Iona Name Meaning & Origin
Iona
Pronunciation: iy-OH-nə (key)
Origin of the name Iona:
Taken from the name of a small island in the Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland. The derivation of the name is uncertain. Some believe it to be a misspelling of Ioua, an older name for the island. Its Gaelic name is I, from the Old Norse ey (island). Thus, it stands to reason that the name might be derived from this root.
