My roommate has this name
My name is Jamia (juh-MY-uh)and I positively adore it! My mom liked the name Mia (Maya)and her two other kids' names started with J-a (Jamin and Jameca), so she tacked it on to the beginning. When I first started school I was always upset when teachers couldn't pronounce it correctly after telling them several times and I'd wish I had a more common name like Ashley or Amanda or Jennifer. At some point in elementary school I realized that it does look like it could be pronounced juh-MEE-uh so I started being more patient with people. Every once in a while I'd get some "Aunt Jemima" jokes, and people can get pretty creative when trying to read the name (Jamalia, Jamma, Geronimo, etc.), but I've never been seriously teased. Now I absolutely love my fairly unique name and even though I normally have to repeat myself, people usually tell me it's a beautiful name when they hear it. I also happen to think it's beautiful, not ultra-feminine but melodic, easy to learn to spell, easy enough to pronounce when reading (if you actually take the time to look at it), not ghetto but still interesting and creative and it fits me perfectly!
