I am one of the few "girls" that I know of (besides Leighton Meester!) named Leighton. While going to college in Virginia, I heard of an aristocratic southern woman named Leighton Fauntleroy who was the mother of one of my classmates. Two little girls have been named "after me" that I know of: Leighton Elizabeth Davis and Lauren Leighton Sullivan. I was named after my grandfather, whose middle name was Leighton. I am originally from Kentucky, and my name is referred to as a "family" name. It wasn't easy being a little girl named Leighton, but I love it as an adult! I am an artist, a high school art teacher and an Advanced Placement art history instructor in California. There is a famous Victorian era artist named Frederick Lord Leighton who painted the beautiful "Flaming June", one of my favorite paintings. I also love that Leighton means "place of the meadow" in old English! My English friends are shocked that anyone would name a girl "Leighton", but say it certainly sounds "posh"!
