Loralei Name Meaning & Origin
Origin of the name Lorelei:
Derived from Lurlei, the name of the rock "ambush cliff," which is derived from the Middle High German luren (to watch) and lei (a cliff, a rock). The name was altered to Lorelei by Clemens Brentano, a German poet. In Germanic legend, Lorelei was a beautiful siren who sat upon a rock in the Rhine River and lured sailors to shipwreck and death.

Our daughters name is Loralei. it has some family significance, but i personally have always loved the 'Lor'and even 'or'sound in it..but then when i discovered the actual meaning, it seemed, well... cool! i prefer this spelling because it looks more feminine, and it allows for the shortened 'Lora' which she likes to be called. Probably because when kids are young the want to 'fit in'. they dont want to have to spell or correct their name each time they meet someone new... whereas teens often like things that make them "individual" So eventually i think she will go by her full name. And as for the 'lei' spelling, it IS a germanic name. So spelling it like other german words pronounced 'eye' like AnahEIm, EInstEIn just seemed right. Now the alternate 'lai' spelling is pronounced "lie" and 'lei' is pronounced "lay" in the Hawaiian language. BUT in english 'ai' is almost always pronounced "aye" such as pain, wait, mail, faint etc. So Loralei, TO ME, is the best way to spell this beautiful name
