I am a Merritt, and I love my name! I didn't like it when I was a little girl, since it didn't sound "feminine," and the only other Merritt I knew was an old man :-). It was my mother's maiden name, and she'd planned to use it as her son's middle name. Alas, it was not meant to be, and when she gave birth to her 6th girl (before the days of ultrasound), she decided to give me the name. Over time, I began liking having a unique name amid the sea of Susans, Lisas and Karens. My niece recently had a little girl and named her Merritt, too...... so now we have two in the family! Over the years I've learned of about 4 other females named Merritt. A few more males have the name, but it's still pretty rare. It's still unusual enough to stand out. I think it's a great name!
