- Comments and insights on the name Mulan
Mulan became popular in the West with the 1998 Disney Movie of a young girl who goes to war as a man to save her father's life. In Chinese folklore, memorialized in the "Ballad of Mulan", was a legendary figure from before the Tang Dynasty. Mulan's story promotes gender equality, that of women warriors, and the existence of warrior sects are very important in SouthEast Asia. In the West, these places are places of politics, so I would think a female named Mulan is aptly named for someone who is powerful, courageous, on the front-lines, yet as graceful and beautiful as the rare orchid.
