Myra Name Meaning & Origin
Origin of the name Myra:
Coined by the poet Fulke Greville (1554 - 1628) for use in his love poems. Some believe it to be a variant of the Irish Moyra; an anagram of Mary; a borrowing of the name of a seaport in ancient Lycia; or from the Latin myrrha (myrrh).

I have been told by several people from Greece that the name Myra means "fate" in Greek. This ancient usage makes sense as the city in Turkey named Myra was a stop on St. Paul's second missionary journey and is listed in the book of Corinthians. I met a jeweler in Turkey who named her daughter Myra because of the meaning "fate". Most explanations stop and start with an obscure piece of 17th century poetry. The name is also popular as a Jewish name. I have heard that the name is finally making a comeback, which pleases me. It doesn't rhyme with anything bad, has a good meaning and personally, I love having this name!
