Pennington is a surname based on an Anglo-Saxon location in Cumberland as well as the parish of Leigh, Lancashire. The counties supposedly take their name from the Old English (pre-7th Century) "pening," a term referring to the tribute due on the land or settlement. The oldest Pennington, Gamel de Peninton or Penitone, also had an Old Norse first name. John Pennington was give his baronet after fighting for the Lancastrians during the Civil War. King Henry VI presented a cup to him; it was called the "Luck of Muncaster" and included a blessing that the family would never run out of male heirs so long as the cup is preserved. Though the cup is unbroken, the last male Pennington of this line died in 1917. The cup is displayed at Muncaster Castle in Cumberland, which has belonged to the Pennington family for over 800 years.
