Meaning: beloved
History: There are two derivations that I know:

1. The Welsh people, who live in the southern part of Wales, near the river Taff, were called Taffy.

2. According to celtic mythology, the name Taffy derives from the name of the Welsh god of agriculture, Amaethon. Amaethon was known for stealing wildlife from the lord of the Otherworld, Arawn.

Taffy in song, story & screen

Since the English looked down on most other British subjects, including the Welsh, an English nursery rhyme came to be, in the mid-1800's, referring to the Welsh as Taffy. See below:

Taffy was a Welshman

Taffy was a Welshman,
Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a side of beef.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not home;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a marrow bone.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not in;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a silver pin.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was in bed;
I took up a poker
And threw it at his head.

Taffy was the little cavegirl heroine of Rudyard Kipling's story, "How the Alphabet Was Made," in Just So Stories.
