12 Dancing Princesses

Ok, so Miriam's post on another thread made me very curious. The original story doesn't give the princesses names, but several of the modern versions do.

So far, I have found the Barbie princess movie which lists the princesses as:
Ashlyn, Blair, Courtney, Delia, Edeline, Fallon, Genevieve (Barbie), Hadley, Isla, Janessa, Kathleen, & Lacey

Another set in a book I found also used the first 12 letters of the alphabet, but with a twist on it:
Angelica, Bryony, Cosmos, Daisy, Enola, Fern, Ginger, Hazel, Iris, Jasmine, Kalei, and Lily

So how about you? What would you name 12 princesses? Would you stick with the first 12 letters of the alphabet? What about going backwards from Z? Theme or not?

Enter your lists below!

There's a YA version of the story called Entwined where the princesses are called:

Azalea, Bramble, Clover, Delphinium, Eve(ning Primrose), Flora, Goldenrod, Hollihock, Ivy, Jessamine, Kale and Lilly.

and another YA retelling called Princess of the Midnight Ball where they are:

Rose, Lily, Jonquil, Hyacinth, Violet, Poppy, Daisy, Lilac, Iris, Orchid, Pansy, and Petunia

Obviously the flower theme is popular.

Interesting—I think that the first time I ever heard the name Genevieve, it was on an old Nickelodeon show that re-told fairy tales (can't remember what it was called), and Genevieve was the name of the youngest princess in the 12 Dancing Princesses episode. I don't remember any Barbie association, though—maybe the Barbie version was influenced by that one? Or my memory could just be really fuzzy. I was quite young and only heard the name spoken on the show, so for awhile I thought it was "Jenavy" (until I encountered a real-life Genevieve in 4th grade and realized that was what I'd heard).

Anyway, on to princess names (which are in truth very much my style):

  • Amalia
  • Beatrix
  • Cecily
  • Delilah
  • Elodie
  • Felicity
  • Genevieve
  • Hildegarde
  • Imogen
  • Juliet
  • Katharina
  • Lavinia

If I weren't sticking to alphabetical order, it would be much the same, but substitute Marigold and Rosamond for Hildegarde and Katharina.

Interesting switch-up of the G and J names! (It should be Giuliana, though -- in Italian, the 'i' after the 'G' softens it to the 'j as in jet' sound; G followed by u is a hard 'g as in get'.)

Alphabetical flower fn with Greek mythology mn:

Alstreomeria Callisto (nn - Alstra)

Bupleurum Soteira (nn - Ur)

Chrysanthemum Nyx (nn - Nyx)

Dahlia Marpesia

Eremurus Thyella (nn - Murr or Murrmurr)

Freesia Cyrene

Gerbera Thelxepeia (nn - Era)

Helicona Echidna (nn - Ona)

Iris Demeter

Kangaroopaw Xenodike (nn - Roopa)

Lisianthus Arsippe (nn - Lisippe)

MonteAster Persephone (nn - Aster)

Side note => There was no J flower and it's actually Monte Cassino Aster. Other than that, I think some of the names are kind of neat, haha. Also, I really liked coming up with nn's for most of these names.

19
February 22, 2014 11:24 PM

I googled for a list of flowers, and the one I clicked had none of those, and only Kangaroo Paw for K. I must have not been thinking at all to not think of at least Jasmine!

February 23, 2014 12:29 AM

Flower names are a rich field, although some letters have a lot more choices than others... I also was unsuccesful finding a list online that's even remotely complete, but combining names from several sources, plus memory, I got:

Aster, Acacia, Azalea, Amaryllis
Buttercup, Bluebell, Bryony
Calla, Camellia, Clover
Daisy, Daffodil, Delphine
Eglantine
Forsythia, Freesia, Flora
Ginger, Gardenia
Hyacinth, Heather, Hazel
Iris, Ivy
Jasmine, Jonquil
Kalmia
Lavender, Lilac, Lobelia, Laurel
Marigold, Malva, Magnolia
Narcissa
Orchid
Pansy, Petunia, Peony, Poppy, Primula
Quincy? Queenie?
Rose
Scilla
Trillium, Tulip
U
Valeria, Veronica, Verbena, Violet
Wisteria, Willow
X
Yarrow
Zinnia

It's ridiculous how much better some of those are. I should've dug deeper (if it wasn't a laid back game I would have.) Maybe even use scientific connotations for real Flower Princesses.
