Science fiction once again leads the way! I figured his parents were Firefly fans. I looked up Bellamy (the CW show The 100 features a male character named Bellamy--and a female character named Clarke) and discovered that in 2014 there were 5 baby boy Bellamys and in 2016 there were 23. Girl Bellamys now number in the ... wait for it ... 100s.

Yes!!! I love his name on so many levels: Firefly fan, gender bending the _other_ way, plus it's a lovely name, well-known but currently underused, with no negative associations to account for it.

(I love the theory of unisex names: why should people-labels be restricted by anatomy? However, on a practical level, I don't care for gender-bending or ambiguous names, because of the pesky gendered pronouns of the English language. I hate the use of plural pronouns as if they were singular, but no other replacement has really taken off in popular usage, so short of teaching everyone Hungarian, I'm not sure what to do....)

Jayne's mom is so right about the inherent sexism of the negative comments. The fact that people deny it shows just how far we have to go. I applaud this family's stride in the right direction.
