Baby Girl Name

Anyone heard of the name Jaina?  Or Jayna?  My husband loves this name (heard of it through Star Wars), though he doesn't like the spelling Jayna.  I'm just not sure if it will be mispronounced or if it's too uncommon for me.

Other than that, we are considering the name Erin.  And we have the middle name of Marie.

I've never heard of Jaina and I do think it could have pronunciation issues. I really like Erin Marie.

I've only heard of the name Jaina (spelled this way, pronounced JAY-na) as a character in the game Hearthstone which I think is based off of World of Warcraft. I'm not a gamer but DH plays Hearthstone all the time. It certainly seems uncommon to me, and I'm guessing it might be mispronounced by some people but I think either spelling would suggest the correct pronounciation. Personally I would prefer Jaina over Jayna, though I can't articulate why exactly.

Jaina and Erin seem like very different styles to me. Both are good names, it just depends what you're looking for!

Of Jaina and Jayna I would definitely go for Jayna. I don't know how you pronounce Jaina but to me it looks like it would be pronounced like the name of the female body part where the baby comes out...sorry but I don't think it would make a good name, I prefer Jayna as it's more obvious that it's pronounced jay-na not jy-na. If you want to use Jaina I would keep it for a middle. Erin Marie is pretty and doesn't have a pronunciation issue.

Jaina Shasana is the name of a religion in India. If you choose this name, be sure to look into Jainism. I'd steer clear myself, because it seems really weird to name one's child after a religion (even if unintentionally), although there are plenty of people named Christian. My guess is that most of the people named Christian are Christians, however.

So, I know of two pop-culture Jaina/Jaynas.

Zan and Jayna are the Wonder Twins, alien superheroes.

Jaina Solo is a Jedi, the daughter of Leia Organa and Han Solo.

I have never had pronunciation issues with either of these, and neither has anyone I know.  (My friends are the kind of nerdy who will complain endlessly about the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and also the kind of nerdy who make Wonder Twin jokes.)  I think both names follow normal English pronunciation rules and most people will get them easily.

If your husband heard of it through Jaina Solo, I'm not surprised he doesn't like the spelling Jayna -- he almost certainly encountered it written down, so has a mental visual of the name.

I know Jana pronounced Jay-na but I like the spelling because it's spelled like Dana so it makes sense to me

I'm not reallly a fan, but I don't think Jaina/Jayna is too far "out there" for it to be really problematic.  It stikes me as a bit of a mash-up between the modern Jayda and more classic Jane.  Because of the similarity to Jayda, I suspect you wouldn't have a lot of problems spelling it Jayna.  Jaina strikes me as the spellling most likley to have problems.
