Big Family Challenge

My mom is the youngest of 14 kids. 8 boys, 6 girls, no twins. Major props to my grandma. I've often wondered how I would handle raising that many kids, much less naming them. So, I thought I'd turn it into a game.

Girls:
Evelyn Marie
Lydia Clare
Amelia Joan
Gemma Elizabeth
Elinor Hope
Agatha Rose

Boys:
James Richard
William John
Joshua David
Luke Julian
Oliver Jarret
Jordan Thomas
Finnean Joseph
Joel Augustine

14? Yikes! My genealogy-tracking software doesn't offer an easy way to find the biggest family, but I don't recall one with even 10 kids -- and the only way they managed to name the more usual 7 or 8 was to re-use the names of the babies who died.

The software does offer a "names" report. Simply going with the 8 most common boys and 6 most common girls repeated too many initials, so I went a bit further down the list:

János
István
Lajos
György
Sándor
Károly
Pál
András

Mária
Anna
Katalin
Erzsébet
Ilona
Julianna

Translating to a more English set, I get:
John
Steven
Lewis
George
Alexander
Julius
Charles
Paul

Mary
Anne
Catherine
Elizabeth
Helen
Julia

I found one ten-child family in my family tree! My great-great grandmother and her siblings, born in Canada and Wisconsin to German immigrant parents:

  • Margaret (b. 1887)
  • Carl Edward (b. 1889)
  • Arthur Wilhem (b. 1892)
  • Magdalena Augusta (b. 1894)
  • Theresa (b. 1896)
  • Hertha (b. 1898)
  • Ferdinand Ernest (b. 1901)
  • Sophia (b. 1902)
  • Herbert E. (b. 1906)
  • Frieda B. (b. 1907)

The only one I don't have a death date for is Carl, so he might have died young. Arthur Wilhelm died at 16. But the rest of them all lived into adulthood. Hertha lived to be 101! Mom was 19 when the first was born and 40 when the last was born. She was born in West Prussia, but emigrated to Canada as a very young child. Dad was also born in West Prussia.

I finally found the 11-child family I was vaguely recalling. These are from Roman Catholic baptismal registers, so the names are in Latin:

Carolus 1847
Aloisius 1850
Franciscus 1852
Leopoldus 1853
Francisca Romana 1855
Henricus 1858
Alexander 1860
Victor 1861
Josephus 1863
Teresia 1864
Ladislaus 1868

(Teresia was my great-great-grandmother.) I've checked the actual images, and yes, Francisca is the only one with a second given (middle) name, and yes, it says Romana. I haven't a clue where that came from. Daddy was a tailor (Latin sartor) in Mór, Fejér county, Hungary. The parents married in 1846.

I have always liked girl names better than boy names, so this was hard. I decided to honour (mostly elderly) family members in middle names, but I like a lot less people than I though, so I mostly chose to go back up in the family tree when I had to (although it was really a reach for the last four boys).

Luce Claudia

Valentina Gisèle

Mar Jacqueline

Serena Juliette

Mila Irène

Eilis Marthe

Emiliano Pierre

Nathanaël Renzo

Solal Jean

James Leone

Alessandro Martial

Rhys Clemente

Dario Martino

Mateo Lucien

This is way harder than I thought, and honestly I probably would not give these names to my kids, even if I were the only one to chose names.

PS: I just realised that except for Dario Martino, there is an L in each of the names... Which is the 1st letter of my surname. I sure like this letter.

I'm the youngest of 11 and I have 5 of my own. I'm going to challenge myself with 7 boys names and 7 girls names, I'll start from scratch to make it more interesting and I really like the idea of having two second names so I'll do that.

Girls.

Boys.

I followed family tradition of honouring family members with middle name. I also used names my H dislikes because I imagine at 14 kids he'd give in at some point!

My great great grandmother had quite a few siblings. We don’t know the names of all of them, so I’ll make something up there.

Lily Opal (my great grandma)

Rebecca Lynn (died at the age of 9)

Un-named twins (died at birth, let’s call them Adam Joseph and Jacob Peter)

Jessie Faye

Annie Louise and an un- named twin (tragic death, he had a name but it was never recorded so no one alive knows it, let’s call  him John Matthew)

David Mark

Un-named baby girl (died at birth, we‘ll call her Mary Jane)

We do know that Rebecca died of appendicitis that was never discovered, and Annie’s twin froze to death in the night.

For  my imaginary brood (using names my husband would never agree to)

8 boys:

Hugo Lysander

Oliver Cassius and Levi Augustus

Felix Jeremiah

Grant Matthias

Seth Callahan

Abram Nathaniel

Isaiah Evander

6 girls:

Mara Josephine

Lilia Persephone

Viola Genevieve

Celia Magdalene

Oona Francesca

Athena Calliope
