Due tomorrow and no boys name yet!

We're down to the wire and haven't found a boys name we both really like yet.  Middle name will probably be David (family name).  Our last name starts with N, so we don't want anything that ends with N.

These are the names I'm thinking of, but some of them are quite popular:

  • Andrew
  • Lucas or Luke (not sure about names ending with "k" given last name starts with "n")
  • Henry
  • Louis/Lewis
  • Eli
  • William

I'd love thoughts on these names or other suggestions!

I like William and Lewis the best from your list but they are all good names.

If I were you I would name him William...

They are all really nice names.  I think they are classic enough that I wouldn't worry too much about popularity.  A classic & popular name is less likely to seem date stamped one day like a trendy & popular name might.

The K ending going into the N last name doesn't bother me.  It certainly doesn't seem to have been a problem for Jack Nicholson.  If it bothers you, Lucas is a nice option & you could still do Luc/Luke as a nickname if you wanted.

Henry David will likely get you questions about Henry David Thoreau.  I don't think it's a bad association at all.

There was a French painter, Jacque-Louis David.  Probably not something everyone will think of, especially since he would have been Lou-ee and not Lou-is.

Eli David reminds me of a character from NCIS.  He wasn't a main character, just reoccuring.  His surname was pronounced dah-veed anyway.  Probably not something most people would think of, but thought I'd mention it just in case it matters to you.

My favorites are probably Henry David (I like the Thoreau connection) & Lucas David.  Though you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Thanks for the replies, that's very helpufl!  Good point about Jack Nicholson - maybe I don't need to worry about the c/k endings.

I hadn't thought about the famous people associations, so I'm glad you flagged those.

I'm also leaning towards Lucas David or Henry David.  I do like Eli, but my sister is thinking of naming a child Eleanor (Ellie for short), and that's too close.  Now I just need to get my husband on board.  His suggestions: Howard and Mitchell  (oy!).

Thanks again for the help!  Feeling more confident that we'll figure this out :)

Not a fan of Howard, but Mitchell isn't too bad.

I'm sure you'll pick the right name!  Be sure & let us know what you finally decide.

As others have said, you have a solid list with great, classic names.  My favourites are

Andrew David

Luke David

One thought I had was to think about how you feel about nicknames.  Luke (and Eli, Henry) are not commonly nicknames, but Andrew is.  Maybe consider if you like Andy or Drew.

Good luck!
