Elizabeth Audrey is getting a brother AND a sister!

I am prenant with boy/girl twins and would love some name feedback.  For girls, my husband and I like elegant, timeless/non-trendy, and easy to spell names.  Our daughter's name is Elizabeth Audrey, so something along those lines.  For boys we are really struggling - we want something common enough to spell easily, but not super common so there are three boys in the same class with that name.  Ideally, they will all have their own first initial.  Here is our current list, and I'd love if you would weigh in or contribute similar names.

For the girl:

Aurelia (kind of out there but has always been a favorite of mine)

Abigail (my husband likes this one but I'm not sold, don't love the nickname Abby)

For the boy:

Emerson (breaks the initial rule but I like it)

You have an overall excellent crop of names. From your girls' list I LOVE Helena, Matilda and Lydia, but perhaps Helena and Matilda slightly more. I think it's due to the positive associations I have with the names.

Helena for me is the beautiful and legendary Helen of Troy, as well as the extraordinary actress Helena Bonham-Carter. I love that it's both a strong and feminine name, well-recognized without being common (what you said you wanted in a name) and that the meaning is 'light'.

My association for Matilda is the Roald Dahl character and of course, the image of the adorable Mara Wilson in the film. Matilda has all-positive associations for me--what better than a brave, intelligent and knowledgeable little girl who is sweet, loving, caring and fights for what she wants and believes in? Matilda is a child superhero in my opinion and I think any little girl would love to share her name with her.

From among your boys' names, my favorites are the timeless Henry and Simon. Simon because I'm a huge fan of Simon and Garfunkel and because I just really like the sound of it. Also reminds me of Simone de Beavoir, as Simon is the male form of her name. Marshall would be my 3rd pick, I love the association with the sweet, fun and romantic character from "How I Met Your Mother".

For boys I suggest the following names: Malcolm, Desmond, Edmund, Edgar, Maurice, Leon, Leonard, Victor, Bernard, Theodore, Vincent, Ulysses, Timothy, George, Ralph (if you like Emerson you might like...), Franklin, Wallace, Toby, Tobias, Adrian, Julian, Jude, Alastair, Oscar, Alfred, Barnaby (my most recent favorite for boys) and Sebastian (my stepson's name).

Thank you for your very thoughtful response!  I am really loving Matilda right now, but my husband is not crazy about it. Helen is his mother's middle name, so I'm hopeful he'll warm up to the Helena option. :)

Your girl's list is almost all in "can't go wrong" territory. The only exception is Lydia: it's a fine and lovely name, but as a sister to Elizabeth it gets too close to Pride and Prejudice, emphasizing the association with the unfortunate character of Lydia Bennet.

I would never have considered this!  Thanks for the feedback!

I feel like Lydia is enough of a classic that Lydia Bennet doesn't have to be a deal-breaker. Although in your family it could be awkward if they become fans of the book as you already have an Elizabeth, who is diametrically opposed to her sister in the novel...

Sorry, I see HNG has already mentioned that it's the combo that is wrong, not the name itself. Completely mis-read that. Sorry!

Both Liam and William are in the top 5, so I would take that off your list. Henry is #33, Caleb is #35.

FWIW, I really love your name options, so I don't know if I'll be much help!

Great point about the Top 5!  I guess I wasn't looking at rankings, just at my experince, and currently we don't know any Liams. :)  Thanks for the feedback.

January 14, 2016 12:23 PM

I think the William/Liam thing must be really regional.  I have a William and have encountered only a small handful of others named William.  However, noone have been in his class and they all went by a nickname (my son goes by the full William).  None of them went by Liam, and I have yet to meet a "just Liam."  Perhaps looking at the state rankings and local birth announcements will help you to determine if you are in a William/Liam pocket or not.

Great lists!

On your girls list I love Ruby, Vivian, and Helena with Elizabeth. Aurelia would be great in the middle name spot as something you love but is a bit of a departure from some of your other choices. Rose is also a lovely middle name choice. I'm with you in that I'm not a huge fan of Abigail/Abby. I know a TON of young ones right now for some reason. I do love the name Matilda very much, but I don't love it with Elizabeth for some reason.

For boys, I really like Simon for you. I also like Henry. I love Wesley but don't love it as much with Elizabeth. Liam feels a little trendy to me and seems like it should be a nickname for full name William (which is a great classic choice, just very popular). Caleb and Marshall are nice but I like some of your other choices better. Emerson is a name that has turned girl for me, so I have a harder time seeing it on a boy these days. I do love Everett though and think that is a similar name that goes nicely with your other names. I like Simon Everett a lot!

Here are some of my fave combos from your list (I added Everett):

Ruby Aurelia, Vivian Rose, Helena Ruby

Simon Everett, Henry Marshall

I'm also leaning towards Rose or Aurelia being a middle name. I appreciate how you combined my choices into first and middle names - gives a fresh spin on them. :)  Henry Marshall is adorable and I never thought of combining them!

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of your girl names.  My favorites for you are Helena & Matilda.  I love the sound/flow of something like Helena Ruby.  I'll suggest Cora, Katherine, Cecilia, Molly & Lucy.

I've already commented about the popularity of Liam.  Personally, I prefer William with Liam as a nickname, but I admit to having a bit of soft spot for William.  I really like Henry, but Helena is my favorite girl name and I do think Helena & Henry are too similar to use for twins.  For boys perhaps you'd also like Everett (I know it breaks the E rule), Mitchell, Sebastian, August/Augustus, Miles & Owen.

Thanks for the great alternative name suggestions!

January 14, 2016 12:41 PM

The girls' names are uniformly excellent, with my strong favourite being Matilda, which has always seemed to me strong and pretty and has great nicknames.

I really like Wesley from your boys' list. I think twins Matilda and Wesley are unexpected, but both names are familiar and classic.

Other boy thoughts: Samuel, Timothy, perhaps Peter?

January 14, 2016 3:37 PM

Those are good, strong boy names.  We know about 50 Sams, but no Timothys or Peters.

January 15, 2016 1:53 PM

I'll also suggest Silas if you like Peter.

January 14, 2016 2:57 PM

This would probably be my preference, in order of favorite to least favorite:

Lydia (would be first except for the Bennet association)

And for boys...

I don't dislike any of these, except maybe Helena for style reasons I can't articulate at this moment :)

Thanks for the feedback!

Lydia, Ruby, Naomi and Aurelia

Caleb, Henry and Marshall

But really all of them are great options.

Thanks for weighing in!

Congrats! I love most of your girl names! My favorites would be Vivian, Helena, Rose, Lydia, and Abigail. I think if you don't like the nn Abby, Abigail may not be for you. Regardless of whether you ask people to call her Abigial, I think people will still call her Abby. If you're not okay with that, there is probably a better name out there for you guys! What about something like Vivian Rose, Helena Rose (my favorite), or Lydia Rose? Those are all beautiful and go well with Elizabeth Audrey IMO. Other name ideas: Caroline, Charlotte, Amelia/Amelie, Clara, Beatrice, Maeve, Fiona, Flora, Priscilla.

Of your boys names, the only ones I am not crazy about are Marshall and Emerson. Marshall is just NMS and Emerson is feminine now to me. Other ideas: Andrew, Ian, Luke, Russell, Joshua, Nolan, Marcus.

I love your alternate name choices.  Thanks!
