James Duke?

I would love to have some feedback from on the name James Duke.

We have been having the hardest time choosing a name for this kid.  We've considered Irish names (my heritage), Japanese names (my husband's heritage), aviation themed names, and many others besides.  So far, James Duke is the first name that's felt exciting to both me and my husband.  It's a double namesake for my father - named James, and a huge fan of John Wayne.  We also really like that it would allow our son to make small adjustments to the name when he's old enough to have his own opinions. He can choose to be Duke or James or Jim depending on who he grows up to be.

But my big concern is that the name just seems too "redneck". My husband is from the south, and I'm pure Yankee.  Am I making too big an issue out of that? Or am not paying enough attention to it?  I would really love some input.

A few other relevant facts... Our daughter's name is Amelia, and our last name starts with the sound "ee", which limits our choices somewhat.

Duke as a first name might strike me as a bit "redneck", but in the middle name spot I think it's a non-issue. His first name will be James which is a classic with a variety of possible nicknames, similar to Amelia. I think James Duke is charming and you could go for it.

"Redneck" is the last thing I would think about "James Duke"! I'm pure Yankee also, born in MA and grew up in upstate NY, and James Duke strikes me as handsome, solid, even somewhat sophisticated. I know a little boy (age 10 or so) named Gr3gory Duk3, whose parents are of the exact same background as me, and he goes exclusively by Duk3. I think it's a great combo, I would definitely say go for it!

That thought never occurred to me. James Duke has no associations for me.

I really appreciate the feedback. We've had zero naming regrets with Amelia, but I'm feeling a lot less confident this time around!

Redneck never occured to me either.  Actually my first thought was Duke University.  I think James Duke is a fine name, and I agree that you have plenty of nickname potential in there.
